Trent Crump says a police sergeant was shot while on duty between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. Monday night near the State Capitol, at 18th avenue and Jackson. Crump says the sergeant, Sean Drenth, was working alone at the time of the shooting. "Just before 11:00 we had some employees for the Capitol Police.. found an abandoned Phoenix Police car.. when they approached they saw that we had an officer down and it was a Phoenix Sergeant that's down," said Crump. The slain officer's last radio contact was reportedly at 10:46 p.m. Phoenix Police units quickly formed a wide perimeter around the area and began searching for witnesses and possible suspects who may have been involved in the shooting. "I don't have any suspect info that's been provided by cameras or witnesses. You have to realize the whereabouts were unknown for some time, and when a witness found the officer he was already deceased." We've learned that Phoenix Fire crews were also called to the scene. They were cutting through a recycling plant's fence, just south of where the officer was found dead. This is about 30 feet from the officer's squad car. Drenth was 35 years old and a 12-year veteran of the Phoenix police department. He leaves behind a wife and his mother. Drenth worked in the South Mountain and Squaw Peak Precincts and was awarded the Phoenix Police Department Medal of Valor in 2003 when he rescued trapped residents in a burning two-story apartment building. Police hope to release more information when ballistics reports come back and after they've had a chance to review surveillance video from nearby businesses. Posted by: Carrera Elite on Oct. 19 2010,6:03 pm Police say 23-year-old Edward James Rose fatally shot 23-year-old Officer George Cortez Jr. after the officer tried to arrest Rose at a west Phoenix check-cashing store on July 27, 2007. The shooting was captured on the store's surveillance video. Earlier, Rose's girlfriend, 21-year-old Norma Lisa Lopez, pleaded guilty to charges of second-degree murder in Cortez's death. Authorities say Lopez reportedly distracted Cortez, which allowed Rose to shoot him. Drenth's body was found in an industrial area near the Arizona State Capitol by Capitol police just before midnight Monday, according to officers, adding to a tumultuous two weeks involving city police officers. Police said Tuesday morning they were searching for suspects and had set up a perimeter around an Arizona Department of Transportation parking lot near 18th Avenue and Jackson Street, where Drenth's car and body were found, police said. Police spokesman Sgt. Trent Crump said Drenth was shot while on duty between 10 and 11 p.m. and that the he was working alone at the time of the shooting. "Security and police officers located an abandoned Phoenix police car here in a commercial district. When they approached, they saw that we had an officer down and it was a Phoenix officer," Crump told CBS 5 News. Trump said Drenth and his car were found in the lot near railroad tracks in an industrial park. He said the sergeant hadn't been heard from for about an hour before his body was found. Crump said he could neither confirm nor deny that Drenth's weapon was missing. He said police were trying to determine if there were any surveillance cameras on nearby buildings that might provide video clues. "This is a case where we were actively looking for this supervisor for some time and that we were unsuccessful in trying to find him, and ultimately he was found with a gunshot wound by the Capitol," Crump said. He said Phoenix police were searching the area thoroughly. "We could have someone out here that is armed and dangerous and it is our responsibility to conduct this search," Crump said. Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon said, "My heart and my prayers are with our fallen police sergeant, his family and our police department. "Rest assured, the City of Phoenix will commit every resource necessary and do everything in our power to find the killer or killers, capture them and bring them to justice," he said. Drenth is the fourth officer killed in the Valley so far this year. Drenth is survived by his wife of 13 years, Colleen, and his mother, Diane.
