I need to clean up the back of the boat before I sell it. Some of the wood needs some attention. I have McCloskey "Man O' War" Marine Spar Varnish is that good enough?

Ahhh gotcha, :good  I'll say one thing though, if you're comtemplating a project and you insist on a ditch pump, I would recomend the Biesemeyer over the Tahiti. The "B" boat is 10 times the boat the Tahiti is, and the return in value is way above the Tahiti, not to mention it looks way better!.. :D  :good

GFR, now that you have seen the stuff I want to fix, do you think the spar varnish is good enough?
Posted by: GoFastRacer on July 07 2006,7:11 am

Sure it will work, resin would last a lot longer though, but if you're cleaning it up to sell it the Varnish will do fine, make sure the surface is prepped good though!.. :good

What's the best way to prep it?
Posted by: GoFastRacer on July 07 2006,7:18 am

I'd use a grinder to get all the big stuff then sand it, whatever it takes to get to bare wood!..
Posted by: Tuchop on July 07 2006,7:20 am

A grinder or a DA I have both?
Posted by: GoFastRacer on July 07 2006,7:22 am

DA should work, probaly easier in tight spots!..

Started tearing into the thing some more. I am guessing the guy before me used the resin and didn't prep the surface right. The resin is flaking off in chunks and is going to be a pain in the ass to remove. I don't think the varnish is going to be good enough. How hard is it to use the resin?
Posted by: Tuchop on July 12 2006,7:23 pm

Oh yea, it looks like he glued the bilge pumps in the tunnels????

I think I am about to pay tuition for an education I didn't plan on getting  :beat
Posted by: GoFastRacer on July 13 2006,5:38 am

You can brush the resin on, but you have to add hardner to it so you don't have a lot of time to put it on, you only mix small amounts at a time, and it's best not to do it out in the heat the hotter it is the quicker it fires off!..
Posted by: Tuchop on July 13 2006,7:05 am

Can I get it at a autobody suppy shop (how much $ )  ?? Right now the old stuff I need to take off is over a 1/4" thick. How thick do you put it on?

Posted by: GoFastRacer on July 13 2006,7:47 am

Body shop supply places will have it, some paint stores carry it too, look in the phone book for fiberglass supplies!.. You sure don't need a 1/4" thick, all it will do is crack all you need is enough to cover the surface, just as if you varnished it!.. If the area needs to be structurally repaired then you'll need to add cloth to it!..

Lot of people do that :stupid  the one in the blue boat originally was stuck to the bottom with adhesive.
Posted by: GoFastRacer on July 13 2006,11:15 am

Guess they do that so it stays in one place, I would think there's a better way than that though!.. :rolleyes
Posted by: Tuchop on July 13 2006,1:33 pm

I have to head to Phx tonight I'll be back at it this weekend.
Posted by: Tuchop on July 15 2006,11:57 am

I went and picked up a couple of new strap hinges from the boat shop today. While I was there I looked at the resin and hardner. They only had 205 and 206, looking at the back of the can I would think I need 209. They said 206 would work now. Do you guys think it's too hot for 206 these days?
Posted by: AZKC on July 15 2006,12:21 pm

Man I don't know with it pushin 105*-110* I'd think the 206 would be tough to work with. But the 209 may be to slow.

206 SLOW HARDENER

[Back]
206 Slow Hardener is a low-viscosity epoxy curing agent for use when extended working and cure time is needed or to provide adequate working time at higher temperatures. When combined with 105 Resin in a five-part resin to one-part hardener ratio, the cured resin/hardener mixture yields a rigid, high-strength, moisture-resistant solid with excellent bonding and coating properties. Not intended for clear coating.

Mix Ratio, Resin:Hardener 5:1*
Pot life at 72°F (22°C) 20 to 25 minutes
Cure to a solid state 9 to 12 hours
Cure to maximum strength 1 to 4 days
Minimum recommended temperature 60°F (16°C)
Pumps required 301, 306 or 309

209 EXTRA SLOW HARDENER

[Back]
209 Extra Slow Hardener is formulated for use with WEST SYSTEM Brand 105 Resin for general coating and bonding applications in extremely warm and/or humid conditions or when extended working time is desired at room temperature. Provides approximately twice the working time of 206 Slow Hardener. Forms a clear, amber-colored solid with good physical properties and moisture resistance for bonding and coating applications. Not intended for clear coating.

Mix Ratio, Resin:Hardener 3:1*
Pot life at 72°F (22°C) 40 to 50 minutes
Pot life at 95°F (35°C) 15 to 20 minutes <<<<<<<<<< if this cures in 15 minutes the 206 will cure in about 5 minutes I'll bet
Cure to a solid state at 72°F (22°C) 20 to 24 hours
Cure to a solid state at 95 °F (35°C) 6 to 8 hours
Cure to maximum strength at 72°F (22°C) 4 to 9 days
Minimum recommended temperature 70°F (21°C)
Pumps required 303, 306-3 or 309-3

Maybe if you got up at 5am to do it the 206 would work. :stupid  Epoxy and paint are a bitch to work with this time of year in an uncontrolled enviroment :flamed

We're going to Apache Thursday night after work. I am not sure which camp site yet but Stacy says  :bowdown it has to be lakefront property  :laugh. So.... I think either three mile wash or Upper Burnt Corral. Anybody been down the road at Upper Burnt Corral?
Posted by: AZKC on July 16 2006,11:18 am

Its no worse than 3 mile's road. They have hook ups in the campgrounds at Burnt Coral I hear. Watch out where you camp ;)  this time of year the washes run pretty good coming out of those mountains to the South :eek

I am almost positive that there are no hook ups at Lower Burnt Corral and Upper Burnt Corral is undeveloped.
