I had set the timing a LONG time ago when I assembled the boat and it was REAL conservative so there wouldn't be any detonation. It would run 42-4300 rpm at about 55 mph. When I brought her back to Anaheim in January to check it out, I had trouble cranking over the engine. I backed off the timing to spin the engine easier, but it just wouldn't crank. The battery was 2 years old with 3 hours of run time, but upon checkout was found to be bad. I replaced it and all was (is) good. I set the timing by ear and headed off to Elsinore for the Tom Papp deal. I made a couple runs in the cove and found the rpm had come up to 4900-5000. The pic above is when I really hoofed it. As I came out of the cove, I backed off the gas and a wall of water hit my legs. Holy fock, I KNOW what this is. What to do.... nail it and head to shore, or shut off and hope I can fix it without going down. I nailed it and made it to shore. Sure enough, the water line from the pump blew off. After scrounging a screwdriver, I put it back on and headed back into the cove. I had joked about a bilge pump being a useless accessory in a flatbottom, but after pumping for 15 or 20 minutes, I was glad I had one.
