Quote (Sleek-Jet @ Aug. 20 2009,8:51 am) | Thanks Art...
I've looked at their webpage, but I want to know what kind of reputation they have.
I don't trust most junk yard people any farther then I can throw them... |
I hear that, I've never dealt with them, but I knew a couple of people that did and were very satisfied with them, but you know how that is!..

Maybe maybe not, do a pressure check on it first, things expand under heat and a head gasket may have leaked, might be ok now I've had that happen before!..

I'm going to do everything I can before I commit to a replacement engine.
Bimmers are notorious for cracking heads when they overheat. Some people say you can repair the cracks, others say you can't... still other say you can't change the head without running the risk of pulling the headbolt threads out of the block... yet others say that isn't a biggy, put Time-serts in the block and you are good to go...
I dunno... there are more conflicting opinions then on a boating forum...

Yes they are notorious for that, but you never know??.. Any head can be repaired, the key there is to find someone that "knows WTF they are doing" that's the hard part!.. As far as stripping head bolt holes, no worse than Chevys I've put inserts in a whole block before, then they are better than new!..

I hear that...
I'm suprised that BMW uses a Torque-to-yeild head bolt directly into an aluminium block without any kind of insert.
I would like to find the efficiency expert that decided, decades ago, that it was better to start using plastic parts instead of metal... and beat him about the head with a box end wrench.

I've never been able to figure that one out, I think that was a slip up in the thought department there!..

Quote (Ziggy @ Aug. 21 2009,11:55 am) | The torque method(bmw lingo called it Angle-Torque) was developed after many years of head gasket failures. The retorque is done after you bring engine temp up to normal, shut down and a particular angle of torque is then applied. No retorque after a certain mileage thereafter. |
Yeah very common done with one of these, just another way of measuring torque!. But ya know, every time you run a motor up to temperature and let cool down, you can re torque and it will pull down some and you can do that until you pull the threads right out of the block!. With the gaskets they have today, it isn't necessary to re torque the heads,(they even tell you that)even with 13 to 1 comp on alcohol!...
