Ya gotta love the humor!  :rotflmao  :rotflmao

I would advise using metal frames with the wood on the inside. In all my remodels I use Anderson. Costs more at first, but I have had very few "call backs". Those that had to be replaced were handled without question by Anderson. Used to like Pella too, but something has happened to them in the last few years....

Had a custom job for Sierra Pacific in Flagstaff, they were very responsive too. They always rec'ed metal for the exterior portion of the window, with the wood trim on the inside....

All in all I use the painted metal exterior and wood on the interior. Looks timeless and classy, and very very few problems down the road. Vinyl screams "we settled for less" in resale terms, but they work well in areas that do not have direct sun exposure....

FWIW.....

Good Luck!

Pella customer service sucks a$$ - at least around here. :pissed

My buddy - the contractor - tried in vain to get availability info from them and they just couldn't get it together. We went with Anderson. Work and look great, I had to use the hose on them to check for water tightness since it won't be raining around here anytime soon.  :(

$2800 plus shipping for 4 average windows and 2 6ft patio sliders, with screens and retro fit kits. In vinyl. Guys trying to tell me only vinyls fall under the tax credit, I'm calling Bullshit on that. Now I gota read up on it.

The energy credit is for the energy rating of the windows, the glass part. :D

The Nitrogen gas is mainly for cold climates....Prevents fogging by reducing the humidity between the panes. It leaks out in just a few years anyway so for our purposes in the desert, we go with basic sealed two pane w/o nitrogen gas, and as high a u value as we can get....

What brand are your windows? Most come in std sizes and you should be able to order a sealed insert that you can reframe and install, some require you buy the pre-framed insert though....

These windows are a high margin business, but they can cut heating/coolong costs. Our cost analysis shows a rewindow with a high u factor can cut heating/cooling costs by around 28%. That should help to figure payback time for the job.. The slick salesmen out there will claim upwards of 50% energy savings....That is based JUST on the glass vs. 1/8" single pane, not to include the frame leakage and insulation leakage....

Any good glass shop should be able to repair/replace a double pane sealed system, I dont know enough about that area to give a helpful rec though.....Maybe ask HD or Lowes who they contract with to do their installations....its a start!

Good Luck!   :beer

We re-windowed our entire house. Used Milgard vinyl. Double paned all the way around as well. Great investement. Spent a little over $7,000 for the windows and install. That also included a nice slider.

Much quieter!!  :good

Milgard makes a triple pane window for high acoustic areas. Each pane is slightly different in thickness and the sound deadening capability is amazing. They put those in our hotel in Carlsbad, CA, which is right next to I-5 and the difference is totally amazing! They are heavy suckers though!

Milgard Noise Suppression Windows

Look for a high STC value, but STC only measures down to about 125Hz. TL values measure the reduction down to the 20Hz range where rumbling trucks and tuba music lives.... :D

I've checked into trple pain and have also heard good things about those guys. Guess it never hurts to get a quote. I'm guessin $6500 just for the windows. We'll see how close I am.

You can always spec the noise supression windows for those noise sensitive areas, such as bedrooms, and go with the much less expensive dual pane windows for everything else...

I have a noise suppression window in our bedroom and I can hear the highway noise from the FRONT of the house, although the highway is about 1/4 mile from the BACK of the house......When I close the door to that guest room, no highway noise....

Also, noise can come in from the attic down, so make sure you address any pathways sound can get in....It's not just the windows..... ;)
