It happens again....

As a school ambassador, ninth-grader Ryan Mullaly would help greet, escort and chaperone new students at Mesa’s Rhodes Junior High.

Ryan was a tall, lanky, good-looking kid, and often would dress up by wearing a nice shirt and tie, Rhodes Junior High Principal Matt Devlin said Monday.

His seventh-grade brother, Nick, was in the band, had a sharp sense of humor and dreamed of starting his own band someday.

Ryan, 15, and Nick, 12, were remembered as outgoing boys and gifted students as faculty and fellow classmates reeled with shock and sadness over their deaths.

The boys were shot and killed inside their Dobson Ranch home by their mother, Susan Mullaly, 50, in an apparent murder-suicide late Saturday night, police said.

Neighborhood shocked over killings

Detective Steven Berry, a Mesa police spokesman, said the parents were having marital problems.

“Kids text, they’re on FaceBook, so the word got out really fast,” Devlin said of the tragedy. “The kids have had time to digest this, but it’s still difficult.

“Some of our students are devastated. It’s going to be a struggle in the neighborhood and the school community. Because of the happy-go-luck way Ryan was, we didn’t see this coming.”

Five grief counselors were on hand at the school Monday as an outpouring of support continued for the Mullaly brothers, both of whom were in gifted classes and described as straight-A students who always had a smile on their face.

As Devlin talked about the brothers in a band room crowded with media, the adjoining room — where the seventh-grade band practiced — was silent because students were struggling with an empty seat where Nick would play a euphonium, a smaller tuba-like instrument.

“Ryan was a little more outgoing, and was a talented athlete,” Devlin said of the two brothers. “Nick had more of a sense of humor and said how he would like to start a band.”

Ryan was the No. 1 tennis player on the school’s ninth-grade team and would have played in a match Monday, but the match will be played without him.

As the Dobson High School club swim team, the Dolphins, competes in its first meet at the newly completed pool on the Rhodes campus on Thursday, the lane where Ryan would have competed in the 100-freestyle and 100-breaststroke will remain open as a memorial to him.

As students were leaving school on Monday, at least two younger students said they were just getting to know Nick Mullaly through classes they shared with him.

“He was smart,” said one student who said he was in Nick’s reading class. “He loved to read.”

“Nick was awesome,” said another student, who was in band with him. “I was just getting to know him.”

Funeral services for the brothers are pending.

Meanwhile, a memorial to the brothers consisting of burning candles, flowers, pictures and chalk messages from friends written on 35 concrete blocks of the walk leading up to the front door of their home was in place on Monday.

A memorial service is being planned at the school later this week, according to family members who were at the Mullaly’s family residence on Monday.

WTF is wrong with people.

I'll start by giving condolences to the families of the deceased and their friends.

I'll continue by saying that the human mind is a very fragile, volatile thing. One never knows how it's going to react to the stresses, worries, and pressures that many, many people are feeling today. This tragedy is most likely one of thousands that have been contemplated. Unfortunately, someone in this case could not come up with a more humane, sensible solution to those feelings that they were being bombarded with. May God take mercy on their soul for the transgressions they have bestowed upon those left behind in the aftermath of this woeful outcome.

I'll close by saying that how you tell your 10YO depends on whether your 10YO is mature enough and able to understand that these types of things are a sadful part of life. Losing a friend/teammate is never easy, and in this instance virtually unexplainable as to how someone who is supposed to love and protect that friend can find a way to do what has been done. Just be sure to let him know that while his friend(s) are gone long before their time and he was ready to let them go, that they are in a far better place where hopefully they can forgive their mother and remember her for all the good she meant to/for them.

I think I'll go say goodnight to my Kids and Wife again.

What a very intense and stressful world we all live in today. What a shame to hear yet again of another senseless tragedy, that involves our youth, and an adult that simply wasn't fit to be a Mother.  My prayers are with the Family that remain, and all of the children affected by this act of violence.

SCOTTSDALE – Police were called to a Scottsdale hotel after an anonymous employee called to report a couple suspected of using drugs staying at the hotel with an infant.

Officers responded to a room at the Homestead Studio Suites on Marshall Way in Scottsdale after someone called police saying there was an 18-year-old white female with an infant staying in one of the rooms with fresh bruises on her. Police were also told that an African American man about 20 years of age was also staying with the female.

The employee told police he or she believed the couple may be under the influence of drugs and was concerned for the infant.

When police got to the hotel room they talked to the female, identified as Amanda Reza and determined the infant was Reza’s baby. The male in the room, Tyrone Hall, reportedly became agitated with officers and was taken outside the room. He refused to talk to officers, continued with disruptive behavior and was taken into custody.

Officers noticed a strong smell of marijuana and found the room was a complete mess with dirty clothes, feces, soiled towels and there was no infant bedding. Officers later found a baggie of marijuana and a dog in the bathroom with dog feces and soiled clothing.

After further investigation it was determined that the couple had smoked marijuana just before police knocked on their door.

Reza was arrested for felony endangerment of a child, possession of marijuana and paraphernalia. The baby was turned over to Child Protective Services. Hall faces felony endangerment of a child, possession of marijuana and paraphernalia. He was also charged with disorderly conduct after kicking out one of the windows of the patrol car.

The service at the school for Ryan and Nick was very nice. Standing Room Only in fact in the school auditorium. Fellow students were lined up back to the doors to speak, but most had to be turned away due to time limitations.

At the first home swim meet, a lane was dedicated to Ryan and nobody swam in that lane for this meet. Some of the swimmers had to leave the pool for while, overcome with emotion as reality sank in on the finality of their missing swimmer.

I can see the look on my son's face of questioning why......He doesn't ask anymore because he knows I do not have any answers for him...I spend a little extra time talking with him and tucking him into bed extra carefully, and I maybe linger over him a little more as I watch him drift off to sleep. Life is so precious. I can't even imagine how the dad is going to be able to handle all this......I'm not sure I could.....

I read about things like this bringing families and communities together, especially communities where this kind of thing is so rare. I hope that happens here, but it's too soon to tell....

Thanks for listening, my HDF family...... :grouphug
