Quote (lawbreaker2 @ Oct. 03 2009,9:39 am) | Quote (WATERDOG @ Oct. 03 2009,12:25 pm) | The tri-annual Arizona Watercraft Survey will be released in the next few weeks. However, I received an advance copy today. The results are VERY telling.
For those that don't know the survey is done, primarily to determine how much gas is bought at land based gas stations, and how much highway fuel tax money is transferred for boating related projects. (more on this later)
It also determines where boaters in Arizona do most of their boating.
These are the boat use figures, with 2006 use and 2009 use. Boat Use is part of the equation used to allocate funding for Arizona County's Boating Safety Programs.
NOTE: a "Boat Use Day" is 1 boat on the water on one day. 2 boats on 1 day would be 2 "Boat Use Days". 1 boat on the water one 1 day AND the next day would be 2 "Boat Use Days". And so on.
Mohave County had 2,393,398 Boat Use Days in 2006. For 2009 the figure is 1,527,284. A reduction of <44%> . (Mohave County includes Lake Havasu, Lake Mead, Lake Mohave & the River between Havasu and Davis Dam)
Maricopa County had 701,931 Boat Use Days in 2006. For 2009 the figure is 401,409. A reduction of <43%> . (Maricopa County includes Lake Pleasant, Tempe Town Lake, and the Salt River Lakes.)
Coconino County had 412,568 Boat Use Days in 2006. For 2009 it's 371,676. A <10%> reduction. (Coconino includes Lake Powell & the Colorado River below Glen Canyon Dam.) *NOTE. 2009 uses info from Utah boats, not included in 2006.
Yuma County had 290,325 in 2006 & 74,171 in 2009. A whopping <75%> reduction. (Yuma County is Lake Martinez, Imperial Dam Rec Area & the River to Clear Lake.)
La Paz County had 624,518 Boat Use Days in 2006 and 640,550 Boat Use Days in 2009. An INCREASE of 2.5% . (La Paz County includes 10% of Lake Havasu, Lake Alamo, the Parker Strip, and 110 miles of River from Headgate Dam to Clear Lake.)
La Paz County was the only major boating County in the State to see an increase.
Overall, Arizona saw a 31% decrease in Boater Use from 2006 to 2009.
Regarding the fuel use and Marine Fuel Tax, approx. 1.1% of gasoline bought from land based gas stations is attributed to boats. Although this may seem like an insignificant figure, it translates to over $5 Million dollars for boating projects. This money is put in the State Lake Improvement Fund (SLIF) for grants to counties, cities, and other entities for improvements to existing lakes and boating facilities and development of new lakes. The State Legislature has swept the funds in SLIF for last year, and this year it will probably be swept again, or the funds allocated to AZ State Parks for operations, maintenance or to make up for other State Park Funds that the Legislature swept or will sweep. |
