=========================================== I read an article in one of the gun magazines a while back called "Home Defense 101", written by a university professor who taught a course in that subject. Here's a summary of that article...interesting and logical stuff:
First of all, you do not want to use a magnum powered handgun for home defense because the bullet has a very good chance of passing thru your target, exiting your habitat, entering the habitat next door and killing an innocent neighbor, especially if you live in an apartment. Since you are responsible for that bullet's travel, all the way to it's final resting place, you want to make sure it stops at the target you're shooting at. So a low speed, heavy load, like .45acp, which will stop an approaching perp in his tracks and not continue on thru the walls and into the house next door, is a better choice for home defense...but only in the hands of a man. Most women, especially small framed women, do hot have the grip strength to pull the slide back on a semi auto pistol, should they need to load the chamber or clear a jammed round. According to the article the number 1 choice for a home defense firearm is a good old 12 ga shotgun. That 12 ga should be a short barreled pump. A long barrel shotgun will preceed you, should you need to move through the house, and project thru a doorway in front of you, which could easily put you in a situation where a perp hiding on the other side of the doorway could grab the barrel and take the gun away from you. That 12 gauge pump should also be loaded with 00 buckshot, which is the equivalent of getting hit with eight to ten 38 specials at once. Why a pump? The sound of a pump shotgun, even in total darkness, is unmistakable and leaves no doubt as to what's in store. A 12 ga shotgun in the hands of a startled or frightened homeowner, especially a woman, sends a terrifying message to whomever is at the business end of that barrel. It's not as crucial to take precise aim as with a pistol, and anyone who sticks around long enough for the follow up...well you get the idea. |
I always keep my Magnum loaded for home protection. I control what might pass through a wall and inadvertantly kill an innocent person, with the kind of rounds I keep loaded in it. A 150 grain pre-frag, hollow-point load is going to leave a big hole in whoever/whatever I shoot, but not go through a wall upon exiting.
"It seemed like a hell of an idea at the time".
