... at least for stock replacement... you'd think I'd learn.

I went with the conventional wisdom on the bimmer forums and replaced the water pump on Becky's car with an aftermarket metal impellar model, cheaper then BMW and supposedly bullet proof.

I guess bullet proof means 7000 miles or so...  :banghead

The front seal has gone out of the pump.  I walked out in the garage yesterday and the drip pan where the car is parked has about a cup of coolant floating it it.  When Becky get's home I drag out the inspection mirror, and sure enough, the water pump is drooling out of the shaft.

So now I get to hope that the parts house I bought the pump from will give me a refund and I get to buy an OEM pump...

One of these days I'll learn...

Dealer has 3 in stock.

The parts house I bought the aftermarket pump through is standing behind their warranty and will credit me back the cost of the pump.

At least they are easy to work on... :D

I know anything is bound to fail (infant mortality and all that)... but anymore I've found that the aftermarket stuff is worse then factory parts.

Like the control arm bushing I put in my Blazer... original ones went 170K+ miles... the ones I put in to replace them are already weather checked and getting loose after 2 years.   :angry

WTF do you think was on the outside of the box my suspension bushings came in?  Moog.

I'd take the hencho in Mexico stuff that was on my Blazer to begin with.  The EPA has so emasculated American Manufacturing that our stuff doesn't last any longer.

Gotta buy a new battery.....got 8 years out of the original...prolly would have still been going strong if the ol' lady didn't leave the lights on a couple of weeks ago. Now it just won't hold a full charge for more than a couple of days.

Well, the surgury was this morning, and the patient seems to be doing well.  Pulled the old new pump out and sure enough, you can see where it has been drooling, probably for a while.

We'll see how long the OEM pump lasts.  If I have to do this again, I think I've got it down to where it won't take me longer then an hour or so...  :good

I don't know nothin' about a 3 series... :D

The biggest bitch is getting the fan off and then back on... There isn't a whole lot of room to work right there, and that's on a 5 series.  Someone needs to invent a two piece fan shroud, that would make thing infinitely easier.

All the bimmer-heads tell you to run an electric fan set up, but those are close to a grand and you have to hack the harnass to get power...  :eek

All the bimmer-heads tell you to run an electric fan set up, but those are close to a grand and you have to hack the harnass to get power...  :eek

Why not just use an aftermarket setup for about $150???.. :stupid

Nothing realy, it'd just look like $hiat... :D

Lots of things hang off the fan shroud on these cars (the expansion tank, aux. pump for the climate control, and half a dozen different hoses), so you'd end up having to fabricate a mess of brackets to keep everything where it needs to be.

The electric fan kits are very nice, all aluminum with a blingy fabricated coolant tank.  I think the price I quoted is actually for an entire cooling system, including a new larger capacity all aluminum radiator.  The fan kit itself is half that price though if bought seperately.
