Three law enforcement agencies that patrol Lake Havasu all said they were expecting large crowds for the Fourth of July weekend and all agreed it was a more family-oriented weekend compared to other holidays. Sgt. Tim Smith said SBCSD is planning the same type of law enforcement operation as Memorial Day weekend that includes nine patrol boats, a dive team and a sheriff’s helicopter. “We will be out in force looking for alcohol-influenced operators and negligent boaters.”
Mohave County Sheriff’s Office’s plan also is similar to its Memorial Day weekend plan.
Trish Carter, MCSO spokeswoman said the agency reported it will launch six to eight boats to patrol the Colorado River and Lake Havasu from Topock to Parker Dam during the weekend’s peak.
Lake Havasu City Police Department is bulking up forces as it anticipates an influx of visitors this weekend. The department also plans to assign additional traffic patrol units to help with roadway congestion near Rotary Community Park during Saturday’s Freedom Festival and Fireworks show.
Sgt. Joe Harrold said on-the-water patrols include four waterway patrol boats and the department’s holiday schedules will start today.
Staffing in the Channel includes seven officers on patrol throughout Friday and three police watercrafts.
“On Saturday, we will have 12 officers in the Channel, and four boats.
On Sunday, 10 officers will be staffed in the Channel along with four boats.
“There will be seven additional officers working the fireworks show to control the flow of traffic and to avoid gridlock at intersections.”
Lake Havasu City Fire Chief Dennis Mueller reported he also plans stationing two, two-man crews on golf carts in Bridgewater Channel. One will be stationed on the east bank of the Channel and one on the west bank of the Channel.

A checkpoint on Lake Havasu recently resulted in eight arrests and 59 warnings, according to a press release.

The Arizona Game and Fish Department’s Kingman regional office reported the operating under the influence (OUI) checkpoint during the final weekend in June resulted in 215 watercraft contacts in a four-hour period, the release stated.

Six watercraft operators were over the .08 blood-alcohol limit, one was for an OUI drugs, and one arrest was for “impaired to the slightest,” the release stated.

An estimated 73 percent of the watercrafts that were contacted were in compliance, but the two most common violations were not having a fire extinguisher and not having a portable rescue device.

Other warnings included insufficient lifejackets, expired registration and a child under 12 without a lifejacket, the release stated.

Of the 215 watercrafts, 28 percent of the operators had consumed alcohol, the release stated.

The game and fish department, the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Lake Havasu Police Department and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management conducted the checkpoint.

“I’d still like to see higher compliance rates,” stated Velma Holt, west sector supervisor for the Game and Fish Kingman office, in the press release. “While we arrested eight individuals, 28 percent of the boats we stopped had an operator who had consumed some alcohol. That means more than one-in-four boats we stopped had an operator who had been drinking.”

1 in 4 for last week-end :eek ...likely to be much higher this week-end with all the "amateurs" out there... :beat

LAKE PLEASANT, Ariz. -- A woman was killed and at least three other people were hurt when two boats collided on Lake Pleasant Saturday evening.

It happened at about 6 p.m. near Scorpion Bay. The lake reportedly was quite crowded at the time.

Witnesses said one boat might have run over the top of the other.

The woman, who was in the smaller boat underneath, was killed instantly. At least two people were air-lifted to John C. Lincoln Hospital.

“Two people got pulled out on stretchers,” said Don Peyser, a boat mechanic who has worked at Lake Pleasant for about 10 years. He saw the accident.

“One woman was able to walk out,” he said.

None of the victims have been identified at this point.

Jeff Sprung of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office said alcohol might have been a factor in the wreck, but because it’s so early in the investigation, detectives are still trying to piece together exactly what happened.

The investigation is ongoing.

Officials are warning people on the lake to be extra careful this holiday weekend.

Looks Like It's Started On Havazoo As Well......

Man dies after hit by a boat
By DAVID BELL
Today's News-Herald
Published Saturday, July 3, 2010 10:14 PM MST

The search is on for a boat involved in a hit-and-run accident that took the life of a 30-year-old man Saturday.

“We’re looking for a boat that is approximately 25-feet in length, predominantly red with a white stripe. It has a V-hull and an enclosed bow,” said San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Sgt. Tim Smith.

Smith said the boat, which also had a Bimini top, was last seen leaving the scene of the accident in the direction of Chalk Cliffs. A man described as a white, heavy-set male with a moustache, wearing a hat, was driving the boat. Also in the boat was a white female with blonde hair.

Anyone with information about the boat or its operator’s whereabouts is asked to call San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Det. Trahin or Sgt. Smith at (760) 326-9200, or any local law enforcement agency.

The accident occurred at 5:30 p.m. at Havasu Lake, Calif. near Havasu Landing Casino, when the victim was one of two people riding inflatable chairs being towed behind a boat. The victim fell off his inner tube and as his towboat was turning to retrieve him, the suspect boat struck him.

The suspect boat slowed after being hailed by the victim’s boat, then fled the scene of the accident.

Medical personnel passengers in the towing boat helped retrieve the victim and immediately began CPR. They brought him to Havasu Landing where they performed CPR until San Bernardino County Fire Department arrived. SBCFD continued CPR until the Lake Havasu City Fire Department boat arrived to transport the victim to the Windsor Launch Ramps at Lake Havasu State Park for transport to Havasu Regional Medical Center.

The victim is reported to have suffered multiple and serious lacerations from the propeller and was unable to be revived.

SBCSD responded with four watercraft and a helicopter. Mohave County Sheriff’s Office and Lake Havasu City Police also assisted.

Investigation into the incident continues. The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.

It’s the only known fatality on the Lake during the July Fourth holiday weekend.

It certainly would. But what-with all of the sheer numbers of "participants" and all of the "factors" that accompany them, methinx it relatively astounding that there aren't more accidents of the ilk that was just reported.  :(

Everyone maintain vigilance and stay safe on the waters the rest of the weekend and all subsequent days and nights in anything y'all do. I kinda like havin' all y'all's BS around. :good

He was from Huntington Beach...the father of a 7 year old son and the sole caregiver of his 88 year old grandmother.  So tragic, and so preventable. :(  :(  :(

Brings back unwanted memories of that boat bearing down on me in GA last summer...
