Signs went up a couple weeks ago along the southern side of I-8 between Casa Grande and Gila Bend Arizona. The region is about 80 miles north of the Mexican border and it warns American citizens of the dangers of hiking in the area.
Mexican drug cartels appear to control large areas of Southern Arizona, according to the Pinal County Sheriff.
According to Borderland Beat, the Pinal County Sherriff says, "We do not have control of this area."
Pinal County investigators are now saying the area known as the ‘smuggling corridor’ stretches from the Mexico's border to Phoenix.
Borderland suggests the area was once known as a family hiking and off road vehicles area. However the government has posted signs warning visitors and residents of the drug and human smuggling activity.
Recently law enforcement in the southern Arizona region photographed, using night vision cameras, cartel members with military arms delivering drugs to vehicles along Highway 8.
“We are three counties deep. How is it that you see pictures like these, not American with semi and fully automatic rifles? How is that okay?" the Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu asked.
"We are outgunned, we are out manned and we don't have the resources here locally to fight this," the Sheriff said at a news conference.

Very true,
Fish and Wildlife report that only a section of the park has been closed, since 2006, because of: "The situation in this zone has reached a point where continued public use of the area is not prudent. The Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge has been adversely affected by border-related activities. The international border with Mexico has also become increasingly violent. Assaults on law enforcement officers and violence against migrants have escalated. Violence on the Refuge associated with smugglers and border bandits has been welldocumented. Many of these activities are concentrated at, or near, the border. The concentration of illegal activity, surveillance and law enforcement interdictions make these zones dangerous.
Here is some more news from CNN......
Sheriff's deputys targeted in cartel drug bust
US cities with Mexican drug cartels
And from the ATF....
Special agent from ATF comments on Mexican cartels operating in AZ
ABC tv.... KGUN 9 from Tucson.......
Arizona Police Threatened by Mexican Drug Cartels
More from ABC...

And CBS and the Associated Press.....

Even though only that section has been officially closed, large portions of Arizona land now have signs like the one above discouraging travel and recreation in these areas due to armed human and drug traffic.......

Thanks for posting the park info so I didn't have to. The Fox story was misleading and inaccurate at best. That 3% was closed in 2006. The violent activity that forced the closure has significantly decreased since then, yet Fox is reporting this story like the closure just happened and the violence is increasing. That may well be true in other parts of AZ, but this story was supposed to be about the BANWR. The info being presented was about other parts of AZ (the BANWR never has been and never will be north of Tucson). I researched this area when I was planning my visit back in May, but it just wasn't feasible to visit within my time frame. And yes, concern about the closure did put it at the bottom of my list. I saw signs similar to the ones you mentioned while I was in the mountains of Sierra Vista. I do understand that there are major problems in AZ, I'm certainly not denying that. If Fox wanted to report on how it is affecting recreational areas throughout AZ, that's great. I think it is important that the public be aware. But they chose to sensationalize an old park closure with "facts" about circumstances in other areas. That's poor journalism in my book. And I'm not just picking on Fox, my beef would be with any news agency that pulled a stunt like this. It's not helping their cause, IMHO. Again, my beef is with THIS story, not the other links you posted.
On a side note, I saw none of those signs on 82 or 83, even in the more remote areas. That kind of surprised me (then again, there's a severe lack of any kind of signage in SEAZ). And the Border Patrol activity seemed less compared to my last visit. The only day I saw numerous Border Patrol vehicles was on a Friday. I fully expected to see an increase in BP visibility, was rather surprised to find almost the opposite. My BP checkpoint agent in Sonoita was a Buffett fan though!
"This is for all the friends I've known, this is for all the ones who've never left me alone. This is for all the ones I've lost along the way...thanks for being a part of today."
