This is a little sample of one of the things I do at work.  For those of you that have been here a while, you know what I do and that my name is not really Fred (it was my dogs name).  Well now you also get a look at my mug in these videos and see what I get to do when people don't wear their PFDs.

A canoe, with a small electric motor adapted to it. Only two seats.  Its very sad that these guys died in 10 feet of water and were probably only 40 or 50 feet from shore.

I know I sound like a broken record with my preaching about PFDs and CO, but please, at least have a couple (more than one) Type IV throwables readily accessible on your boats.  Someday you might save someones life on your boat or someone elses.  Maybe your own life.

You just can't imagine how many people I stop that either don't have or even know what a throwable is.  If they have one, its usually stuffed away in some compartment and it takes them ten minutes to find it.

Keep one right next to your driver's seat. If you don't have one, ask me and I'll give you one.  Those things are so important that Game and Fish give away thousands every year.  They usually deliver ten cases of them to me at the beginning of summer and I run out before the summer is over.

Just a little over a year ago, 2 of my friends in ATL celebrated the birth of their first child, after a long, long, long time trying to get pregnant.  Fast forward to June.  They head out to Lake Lanier with some other friends of ours.  I then see pics on Facebook of the trip, with little Ana-Marie in the boat WITHOUT A PFD!!!  I immediately lit into my friends.  Rick informs me that kids are not required to wear PFDs in GA...and besides, it was right there within an arm's reach.  WTF??  I informed him that it most certainly IS the law in GA, and that an arm's reach isn't going to do him or her any bit of good if they're flying through the air or already unconscious.  At that point I didn't care if it cost me their friendship, I was pissed.  His SIL laid into him too, reiterating that is is the law.  Bet he doesn't make that mistake again.  At least I hope not. :(

The sad part is that most states require the PFDs for kids while the boat is moving, ie; underway or adrift, but not when stopped and anchored.  I understand the reasoning, who wants to sleep on a houseboat wearing a PFD?  Especially a 6 year old.  But I've stopped and talked to people that are at anchor and swimming and as soon as they stop, they take the PFD off their baby.  :angry

familyties, thats a great place to keep your throwable.  The reason they got away from making the throw rings and switched to the seat cushion style was just for that.  More people are likely to have it right there under their butt and ready to use  :good .  Although if you're a current Preparation H user, the old style ring might be better.

Oh, and just to add fuel to the fire...

Georgia boating law SL 6:

Georgia law requires that all children under 10 years of age wear a U.S. Coast Guard—approved PFD while on board any moving vessel. This law does not apply when the child is in a fully enclosed cabin.

Every state requires PFDs for kids, its just different ages that require their use.  10 is way too young.

Here is a safe boating course for your friends back in Georgia, Kat..Safe Boating Course

Even though my son is in his 7th year of competitive swimming, has won many championships and is ranked regionally, he still wears his type III whenever our boat is moving.

He doesn't do this because its the law, he does it because, as he says, "I can't swim very fast unconscious."

I make him do it because I can't rescue a 12 yr. old I can't find in the water......

We do need new type IV throwables though.... Ours blew out of the boat on the trip back from Saguaro a few weeks ago. So if you find a couple of bright lime green type IV cushion throwables...They're ours!   :laugh

Everbody should be required to take a boating safety class in their respective states, as far as I'm concerned, prior to making their first trip out on the water.
It would save a lot of heartache for many!!

Very sad.

It's not fun being the Safety man on a boat when everyone else just wants to have fun, and get tired of hearing the rules over and over.

I carry two throwables on the boat and always have someone pull at least one of them out onto the seats before getting in the water.
Keep a couple life vests under each seat, and still carry small child sized vests even through my kids are grown.

Not to hijack the original thought...but once while putting through the gorge we were approached by a Sheriff who asked that we stop and allow him to perform a "Courtesy Check".

Of course I complied, no reason not to. All of his questions were asked and answered.....he seemed a bit perturbed that he couldn't find anything and when asked where our throwable was I pointed to my wife who was sitting on it, "There it is", she held it up.

Well that's when he got all ridiculous on us....."You know I could cite you for that, don't you?" I asked what? cite us for having a throwable?

"No, it's not readily available if she's sitting on it"

I just looked at the guy...you know look - the one that says, "You're an A$$hat and you know it"

I had 15 PFD's and three fire extinguishers on board a 23' boat and this was how it ended...have a nice day  :D  :beat

Stop by the station some Sunday and I'll give you a couple.  Just let me know you're coming so I can be there.  We don't constantly man that place in the winter.

When I Bought My Boat, It had A Throwable Cushion With A Rope Tied To It, And 2 Others Without. Is That O.K.?? :stupid

Carbon Monoxide poisoning kills boaters.  Take the time to learn about it and how to avoid it.
