Passenger Discovers Loaded Ammunition Clip on Phoenix-Bound Flight
Updated: Tuesday, 23 Nov 2010, 3:30 PM MST
Published : Tuesday, 23 Nov 2010, 12:02 PM MST

PHOENIX - A passenger aboard a Southwest Airlines flight found a fully loaded ammunition clip from a law enforcement officer's service weapon during a flight Tuesday from Burbank, Calif., to Phoenix, an airline spokesman said.

The passenger handed the clip to the flight crew after finding it in flight, Southwest Airlines spokesman Paul Flaningan said.

The plane landed safely in Phoenix, and passengers on Flight 1297 were taken off and rescreened. The plane was also searched and no other weapons were found.

The passenger who found the clip was met and questioned by TSA and Phoenix police at Sky Harbor International Airport.

The clip apparently was dropped accidentally by a licensed law enforcement officer who declared he had the clip, Flaningan said. The law enforcement officer was on a previous flight.

It's not clear how long the ammunition clip was on the plane or what caliber bullets the clip held.

Flaningan was unable to say if the officer was an air marshal or a police officer.

This whole debate about airport security drives me crazy.

No offense to anyone here who may work for or is related to anyone who works for the TSA, but...

The TSA has never caught a single terrorist.  They have kept a lot of Crest and Listerine off the planes, but they have never caught anyone with any sort of explosive device.

Those who say "air travel is a privilege and not a right" should also understand that driving is also a privilege yet I do not have the authority to stop you from driving on the road unless I can search you unless I have probable cause to believe you have committed a crime.  More people are killed EVERY SINGLE DAY by someone committing a crime on the roads than have been killed by terrorists in airplanes in the last nine years.  The same goes for schools, shopping malls, coffee shops, restaurants, and even military bases (Fort Hood).  All of these places have a much more dangerous history than an airplane and you still wouldn't allow someone to conduct a TSA search on you before you went to each of these places.

By definition, terrorism is the use of violence or threats to produce a state of fear and submission.  If we continue to submit to illegal searches at the airport, terrorism has succeeded, and soon we will be searched and scanned everywhere we go.

Secondly, the TSA has now granted that pilots and flight crews are not required to be searched prior to boarding the planes.  Great!  I'm sure Al Quaeda will never crack the ranks of flight crew members (note heavy sarcasm here).  I've been on numerous prisoner extradition trips across the country in my career, and yes, we transport prisoners on commercial flights daily.  On both trips, to and from, I am flying armed.  I've been authorized by the FAA and my agency to do so.  So, why when I fly on vacation do I need to be searched?  If I wanted to take over a plane, wouldn't I just do it when I am on my way to pick up a prisoner and am already armed with a .45 cal. handgun?

We have become sheep and I will admit, when I go on vacation in January I too will submit to this ridiculous display of reactionary security, always one step behind the bad guys.

Rant over...

I feel better now...

not really.

Oh, and by the way, I've never left a loaded or unloaded magazine on the plane.  It wasn't me, I promise.

I was a FFDO (Federal Flight Deck Officer) from 2002 until Obama killed the program. Now that I dont have a weapon in the flight deck anymore, do you feel safer? Well do ya punk?

Believe me, if pilots wanted to take down an airliner, we don't need a weapon to do it....

Total number of professional 121 Captains involved in air piracy since the inception of the airplane..... 0

Total number of middle eastern folks involved in US air piracy that didnt just divert to Cuba.......All of em....

And that's why we are strip-searching 8 yr. old boys and 89 yr old grandmothers....  :rolleyes

If you have to fly, just suck it up and do it....... They confiscated my nail clipper after 911 at LAX... I just gave it to them.....They missed the fact that I dont need a nail clipper to fly into the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating facility If I wanted to....But they got that clipper. I hope it made them feel like they were doing a good job....

Things have changed, obviously. Passengers are now the first line of defense in the cabin, and for God's sake don't let anyboby into our flight deck because we don't even have nail clippers to fight them off with anymore........ :confused

WTF....

BTW we carried .40 H&Ks with frangible ammunition that wont pierce the cabin walls. They will spoil most of your day if you get in front of them, but hey, we dont even get to carry those anymore......

I don't think people should suck it up... the TSA operates on fear and the mob mentality.  They have attempted to bully the flying public into believing that if you do not aquiesce to their secret rules (that often times change on the spot), you'll have a suite at Gitmo.  They also go to great lengths to keep people in line as to "make it easier for the next guy"...

:rolleyes

It's time for some pushback... nudi-scopes and "enhanced" pat downs don't do one thing to catch terrorists or make an trip safer.  Lets ignore the fact there is no such thing as a "safe" amount of radiation.  The flight crews were just in their concerns over the Rapiscan machines.  Regardless of their tin badges and blue shirts, TSA screeners have no power to arrest anyone (that's why they call the LEOs), it is simply a make-work program at this point... time for it to go bye-bye and spend the  money on something usefull, like catching terrorists and discovering plots long before anyone of these crazies even reaches the terminal.

I carried the same, USP 40, and I can tell you that every flight I took the crew was always thrilled to have us on board, they treated us like kings! Sometimes the captains weren't too thrilled with having a prisoner on board but they always had the option to refuse us, they have the ultimate power and nobody would blame them if they refused. They never did for me. The prisoners transported on commercial planes are not violent criminals and I've always made it clear to them the consequences of disruption. Most of them won't even say a word. Nobody on the plane has ever even known they are handcuffed.

I'm glad they stopped searching the flight crews, that was ridiculous. The first pilot that refused was smart.  My point is, let's figure out who the real threats are and focus on them. Stop searching children, even though I realize anything is possible, and stop searching other people like cops that have been already cleared to fly armed on other flights.

Stop infringing on our rights to travel throughout a free country without being searched. It will only lead to us all giving up more of our rights in the future.

With freedom comes risk...I'll take the risk.

Airline security is a joke if you ask me!!

They let me on flights with full bottles of alcohol or wine all of the time in my carry on luggage!! If that's not a weapon, I don't know what is!!  :rolleyes  :banghead
