Fla. real estate tycoon Posner dies in boat crash

The Associated Press
Tuesday, November 30, 2010; 12:53 PM

MIAMI -- Real estate tycoon Steven Posner has died in a high-speed boat crash near Miami that killed another man and left two other men injured, authorities said Tuesday.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission issued a statement confirming the death of Posner, the 67-year-old son of the late corporate raider Victor Posner, and said it is investigating Monday's crash on Biscayne Bay.

The agency said a friend of Posner's, 60-year-old Clive Warwock, was killed and that the tycoon's 64-year-old cousin, Stuart Posner, was seriously injured. Both men were aboard Posner's boat.

The statement said Posner's 44-foot race boat and a similar 46-foot vessel crashed into each other and that the operator of the second boat, 27-year-old Friedrich Eigelshoven of Fort Lauderdale, suffered minor injuries. A passenger on the second boat was not hurt.

The crash happened about 1 p.m. Monday in clear weather. The Fish and Wildlife Commission said the two boats - each capable of speeds approaching 100 mph - appeared to be racing before colliding, according to witnesses.

Friends and family members said Posner loved fast boats and entertaining guests.

British businessman killed in Florida speed boat crash
A British businessman has been killed after two 100mph speedboats crashed in Florida.

The fatal speed boat crash took place in Biscayne Bay, Miami

Clive Warwick was thrown into the water after the boats crashed in Biscayne Bay, Miami, US.

The 60 year died from blunt force trauma along with property mogul Steven Posner.

Three other people were injured after what investigators said was one of the worst boating accidents they had seen.

Mr Warwick, 60, who moved to Florida from the UK in the 1980s and made his fortune selling pin ball machines, was known as a adventurer.

His son Lee said his father had climbed Mt Everest earlier this year and he had twice circumnavigated the world.

Mr Lee said: "When he made it back, we were so grateful.

"We told him how concerned we were that he wouldn't survive that climb. But he survived it, and he made it back down, only to die this way."

Mr Warwick was on the 44ft boat with 67 year old Mr Posner and another family member, 64 year old Stuart Posner.

The other man on the boat, 53-year-old Mark Mclennan, was not injured.

Both the Posner boat and the 46-foot Skater rigged with twin 1,200-horsepower engines with which it collided – named Mixed Emotions – were racing catamarans, capable of rocketing across the water at more than 100mph.

They are so powerful that they require two people to safely operate at high speeds – a driver at the helm and a throttle man controlling the speed.

"There is no speed limit when you are on the open sea outside controlled conditions," said Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesman Jorge Pino,"but you have the responsibility to be very careful."

Both boats were heading north at a ``high rate of speed,'' said Officer Jorge Pino, a wildlife commission spokesman. GPS records will help authorities determine just how fast the boats were going when they collided.

Posner's boat was to the right of Mixed Emotions when the Posner boat made a turn to the left, striking the right side of the other boat, Pino said.

``We don't know why, but we know the vessel veered,'' Pino said.

Authorities are still trying to determine who the throttle man was on the Posner boat.

2ND BOAT

The Mixed Emotions was operated by Friedrich ``Fritz'' Eigelshoven, 27, and Mark McLennan, 53. Eigelshoven was treated and released from Mercy Hospital for unspecified injuries. McLennan was not injured.

A friend of both boat owners said Posner's boat was trying to overtake Mixed Emotions when the crash occurred.

Larry Goldman, owner of Xtreme Marine, a performance dealer in North Miami, said both men were his customers and had met through him. He said they saw each other near Grove Harbor Marina and decided to head out on the water together on the spur of the moment -- some 20 minutes before the crash.

`TOO CLOSE'

Goldman said Eigelshoven told him his vessel couldn't keep up with the Posners, and he had slowed down to about 75 mph waiting for them to circle back and around.

``That's when he saw the boat coming too close and started turning hard left,'' said Goldman. ``He realized they were coming at him. He turned away from them. That's the last he remembered.''

Efforts to reach Eigelshoven and McLennan Tuesday were unsuccessful.
