Sittin here listening to "The Thrill is Gone"  and it brings back memories of dark smoke filled pool halls.. Gambling till all hours of the night,  living on nothing but double shots of crown royal on the rocks..

I was broke.. but damn I miss it.

This  song has got to be on the top of my list of best pool hall songs ever.

LOL...   Well it's a different kinda lifestyle that's for sure.   I dunno about pitiful though.   Depends on what your priorities are,  alot of "Legends" come outta those dark smokey rooms.  Granted there "legends" that most people on these boards would never hear or even know about,  but to guys like me..  People Like
Louie Ulrich aka Louie Louie aka King Louie,
King Kong
Jamie Pluta
Sam Manole
Steve Mcqueen
Victor Castro
Jeff Beckley
and countless others that never even played on the pro tour are "Gods" to guys like me.

Watching these guys "work" is an artform within itself.

There actually used to be a couple around North County, but there all closed down now. :(    I played quite a bit at what used to be La Mesa billiards as well as College billiards as well.  La Mesa was (IMO) the best pool hall in San Diego at the time.   Full bar, 2 stories, good music, great tables, hot waitress, and a full blown custom cue mfg upstairs in an office.  It was pretty awesome.  I heard they sold it and it's got a new name, I haven't been in years.   There were many pool halls that fit that "mental image"  for several years even after the  smoking laws came into effect.  :)  Now days though your lucky to find the roque bar that is "dark & smokey."
