HD, good luck if you end up striking.  Our union put the word out that we are to honor your picket lines.  I hope for your sake that it does not last long, and that it comes to a satisfactory resolution.

Thanks Rick. :D  Here's the latest. The union is currently authorized to call a strike as the employers offer was rejected by 98%. :eek  It only takes 2/3 to authorize a strike.  The initial union plan was to target and picket 1 chain (Albertson's, Ralph's, or Vons).  The other 2 chains promised to "lock out" their employees if that happened.  They have to wait 48 hours after the strike begins to do that though.  It was announced by the union Friday night that the targeted chain would be Albertson's.  The good news is a federal mediator has stepped in to help with the negotiations and progress is being made.  Through out most of Friday, we were anticipating a midnight strike.  We were at "Defcon 4", but the progress made in the negotiations Friday evening looked encouraging.  That dropped us down to "Defcon 3" and the salary managers got to go home rather than spend the night.  I'm a union manager which really means that I am NOT a real manager.  I had to turn in my keys.  Now we will have to wait and see what the employers are willing to offer.  It's too bad there's not a Stater Brothers in our neighborhood because the dispute is not affecting them.  They are not negotiating.  They have agreed to honor whatever the other employers offer. :)

OK, it's official.  I was locked out of work by my employer, Albertson's.  This was in response to the union's decision to strike Vons.  It looks like I'll have some free time in the future.  Does anyone want to hire me? :rotflmao

Hate to see it, but sometimes it comes to this, unfortunately.

I'll abstain from shopping at Albertsons till this is resolved.

Hang in there Doug.

Lock outs suck a$$, when I worked in the copper mines we would strike every 3 years or so, one time we were out for 4 months. One of the worst was almost 9 months I was still in school but it killed the area for a long time.

Hang in there Doug and enjoy the break :beer

Thanks for the support everyone.  I'll get to spend some extra time with my daughter today, but once she goes back to her mom's, I'll be picketing. :rotflmao  I'll attempt to have fun with this even though it's a VERY serious issue.  BTW, I trained my replacement workers so there wasn't much incentive to do a very good job. :) My last words to my boss when I left were "May God help you."  :rotflmao

Theres a Vons across the street and there were a few people out there with signs today.

Good luck to ya Doug...hope it gets resolved soon. Does this mean you have to find a new job, or wait til there is an agreement?

Say hi to Megan for me.

Thanks Windy. :)  Megan says "Hi" back! :D

My union actually has a fund to pay us from if we picket.  I will start picketing after Megan leaves this evening.  It's a nominal amount, but it's something.  I will not actively seek other employment yet, but wouldn't turn down a good offer if the opportunity came.  There is some good news though.  Up until the strike began, the employers keep reminding us how competitive the industry is in SoCal.  That's exactly why THEY can't survive a long term strike/lockout.  They have survived long strikes in markets where customers have had no where else to shop.  In SoCal, there are many options.  They KNOW that, but just can't admit it.  They have used scare tactics and warned of a 4 month dipute.  They can't survive that long.  It should end much sooner than that.

Thanks Matt. :D

I just hope this is a hard, but quick hit.  The quicker the companies see lost sales, the quicker they will reconsider.  I wish this didn't have to be inconvenient for anyone.  The union decided to strike just one chain to minimize the inconvience to the customers.  The other 2 employers "locked out" their employees to pay the union back.  If no one shopped at the involved stores, this will be over quickly.  If people cross the picket lines, it will prolong the inconvenience for everyone.  There are MANY issues on the table, but the net result is less money for the same work.  Since the cost of living is not going down, the current offer is unacceptable.

Doug, I know what you're going through. My union (Local 1173 of the Automotive Machinists) struck 9 dealerships here in the San Francisco East Bay. Spent the entire month of July walking the picket line 6 days/week. Like you, we got a minimal weekly check from the Union's strike fund. Just about enough to pay the small bills and buy food.

It's amazing the nerve the owners can have in offering a contract. We voted 275-0 against the joke presented to us. It contained no mention of our pay, instead referring to that as "to be discussed". They obviously expected us to continue working without a contract while negotiations continued. In the end we got back most of what we had in the previous contract, with the key being the retention of our health and pension benefits.

Best of luck to you and your union brothers and sisters. :good

Sorry, but I still have to get all the groceries and beer.  I will have to walk through as will every other American that depends on food for survival.  Unless of course we should go buy at a chain who doesn't support the Union at all.  The union is the end of many US based jobs, go back to work and be glad in this economy you have a job.  The only ones that win in Union partnership are those at the top of the Union; compare where you live to where they live.  Why is there 'digs' nicer than yours?

You think they should allow management to cut their pay and benefits, and just return to work happy just to have their jobs!  What happens next time their contract is up, take further cuts.
I think not.  Make them come to the table and negotiate a fair and equitable contract.

Sorry guys,
unions made it possible, at least in the U.S., to make what is now the middle class to exist.  If the brave men of the 20's and 30's did'nt stand up to Standard Oil and the likes back then, we'd still be in tenement housing, and most likely closer to a caste system with greater distance between the haves and have nots that exists in Europe. Hot Boat ownership under those circumstances?  Forget about it!

Unions are'nt the "end all" answer to the U.S. economy, but it works a hell of a lot better than communism and socialism.  I can't be mad at Kim as Canada runs on a much different system in terms of free med. care and  govt. backed retirements than the U.S. does.

Although my union will never strike (public safety), we support the lines and there are alternatives for food purchases in So. Cal.  I think it's sad a guy like Sam Walton who started out with a good idea turned a thriving business into one that pays the lowest wages and little benefits to it's workers today.  A little less profit margin at Walmart would have made it's employees able to actually earn a real world living wage.

I hope all sides keep their cool and little violence occurs.

Good luck to Doug and all union members out there that stood up to the plate.
I'm an Albertson's customer but will be at Stater Bros. until this ends.

Thanks to most of you for your support.  I guess someone in thread is not aware of the fact that SoCal has plenty of places to buy groceries that are not affected by this strike/lockout.  In fact one major chain called Stater Brothers IS union and they are completely willing to accept the terms of whatever contract the others end up offering.  They have not locked out their employees either.  They can do this because our expired contract was fair and the companies were able to make their profits.  As far as non-union grocers go, I don't have a problem with them if they are fair to their employees in the first place.

Bottom line -  I can't afford to pay more for less health insurance coverage with less money.
