For those of you that don’t know Lindsey and I just returned from our vacation to Scotland. The reason for the trip was to fulfill my longtime goal of Deer Stalking on an Estate in the Highlands. I have to give Lindsey credit for this trip because Scotland at the end of September can be a very cold and dreary place. But she went along with me and never complained one bit!

I spent three days Deerstalking on and estate in the eastern highlands named Glen Dye. It is about 32,000 acres of hill and has some of the most beautiful scenery in the area. Just up the road is Balmoral the estate of the royal family. But Charles never invited me over for tea.

After my Deerstalking we spent the rest of the two weeks exploring the Highlands. I put almost 2000 miles on the rental car. The guy at the counter when I checked it back in didn’t believe me and double checked the mileage.

Anyway on with the pictures

Me in the morning heading out. You may laugh at the attire but it is the appropriate clothing for the hill and kept me extremely comfortable even in the rain and wind.

My first stag

Bruce loading the stag into the “Machine” to take it off the hill. It took an hour to get down to the landrover. It took us all day to walk up the hill.

My third stag

Here are some highland cattle in a field that we stumbled on in our exploring of the highlands. Lindsey wanted to take one home.

Theese two are for Mary first a Hill Castle and then a Ruined Castle on the coast

It was a wonderful trip and I hope to do it again some day. :)

Nice photos but couldn't never understand why people kill those animals. Personally I think it is wrong!

Nice photos but couldn't never understand why people kill those animals. Personally I think it is wrong!

The reason they are killed is called wildlife management. All of those deer were selected from the heard by the estates Gamkeeper. He chooses the old stags that are at least 13 years old. The reason for this is to allow the younger stronger stags to breed and better the heard. Those old stags would die within two years anyway from either starvation or freezing during the winter. As they get old they get weak and they wear their teeth away making it difficult to eat and survive cold weather.

The carcass of the animals killed are sold to Butchers and then sold to markets throughout Europe. The money made from this allows the estates to employ Gamekeepers. Gamekeepers spend all year keeping the habitat in balance. Every wild animal on the estate benefits one way or another from the work that the keeper does.

Without the keeper and the work he does. The land owner would burn all the heather (to allow grass to grow) and put sheep on  the hill. Doing this would be the end of the deer and grouse native to Scotland. Not to mention Heather that only grows on the Brittish Isles. If you think I am making this up I am not, it is exactly what has happened south of the border in England over the last 30 years.

I respect your opinion and if you do think its wrong that is fine. But you may want to do a little research on it. You may change your opinion.

Looks like an outstanding trip, the Scot in me always has wanted to return to the old country (my grandmother's family hailed from Scotland).

You can not throw a rock in Scotland without hitting a castle. Castles are not in a shortage there. But they are all rather small. You need to go south into England for the big fairy tale ones.

Here are a few more

Those castles are big but nothing compared to the ones in England. I will go see if I can dig up a picture of Windsor castle to show you what I mean.

This is a picture of Windsor Castle that I took on another trip when we rented a boat on the Thames. It is absolutely enormous! The picture is a little fuzzy because it was raining that day.

Scotland and England are a places that you either love or you hate. If you fall in love with them, they will get in your blood and drag you back.

If I ever move from here that is where I am going. I love it there! :good

All 3 of my kids freaked when they saw the castles. My 3 year old said "that is where the princess lives mama."
That was a priceless moment. ;)

He knows he is a lucky man.  :cool
It would be nice if my husband would hunt, but he doesn't and I have not gone in a long time. Maybe someday he will try? You either like it or you don't. I do not think he would like it to much. Now deep sea fishing he might like??lol

I see pics of you, but where are the wifey pics at??UUMM
