Windows ME.

I can get the computer started and loaded up, but the computer doesn't recognize the video card, or the mouse, or the sound board.

I don't know, maybe a virus isn't the problem.

Another thing, none of my internet history files are there anymore, they are gone.

Why would you format the Hard Drive from a Virus?  Most of the viruses out there you can recover from... How do you know you have a virus?  Did a anti-virus program tell you that you have a virus?  If so, which program?

Windows ME has a built-in "Go Back" function..... to where you can restore your system from a previous state.

Try This:

First Click on Start, click on Programs, click on Accessories, click on System Tools, and then click on System Restore.
It will show you the Welcome to System Restore message.  Click on Restore my computer to an earlier time.  Click Next
It will then display a calendar with today's date selected.  On the right you will see a list of restore points that were created today, either manually or automatically.  If you choose a different date, it will then display the list of restore points for that day.  Choose the date and restore point that you want to restore to and Click Next.
It will give you a warning telling you to close or save all programs, and not to alter, open, or delete any files.  Click Ok.
It then explains that the System Restore will not destroy or alter your documents in any way, however you will have to reinstall any programs that were installed after the restore date.  Click Next.
It will then do the restore procedure automatically and restart your computer.
Upon returning to windows it will give you a confirmation screen stating that the restore was successful.  Click Ok.
You have successfully restored the computer!

I'm grasping at straws here.

I ran my anti-virus, but it showed the last update almost a year ago, even though I updated last week.

I'll go see if I can find the "go back" function.  Without a mouse, it's kind of a pain in the ass.

OK, I just performed the system restore.  After it was done, and the computer restarted, I got this message:

"Rsturi caused error in Kernel32.dll"

The computer is the same as before I performed the system restore.

Dude, I got a Dell.

I tried system restore using several different dates, no dice.  Each time I get the error message, and the system restore is not successfull.

If you had this machine for a year it's time for a reformat anyhow!..You be surprised at how much better it runs after getting rid of the garbage that's accumilated over time!.. :good

ahhhh....It's a Dell.  That explains it!  J/K :D   It's an OS problem for sure.  I would just use the Dell "repair" function, unless there's nothing that you need to save on your HDD, then in that case....  C:\>Format C: /q   :break  :D

Just out of curiosity, which model of Dell is it?  I have access to the Secure Dell DCSE website (Dell Certified Systems Expert) and was just wondering if it is related to a few recent issues with Dell machines that are currently being addressed.

221 Associate Portables Certification V4.5 Part 1 (Latitude) 9/16/2002
267 Associate Server Certification V4.5 Part 1 (Hardware D/R) 9/16/2002
244 Associate Desktops Certification V4.5 Part 2 (Optiplex) 9/16/2002
246 Associate Desktops Certification V4.5 Part 3 (Dimension) 9/16/2002
242 Associate Desktops Certification V4.5 Part 1 (Memory and Networking) 9/16/2002
248 Associate Desktops Certification V4.5 Part 4 (Workstations) 9/12/2002

Go to http://dcse.dell.com to find out more info on how to become a service provider and to gain access to the DCSE Website.  All of the certification tests can be taken online at the DCSE website and they are Timed Tests.  If you fail the same test 3 times , it requires mandatory classroom training (provided by Dell at various locations).  The company that I work for is a Dell Warranty Service provider so it is mandatory that I am certified on all Dell products that I service (otherwise, we don't get paid by Dell :rolleyes )

Actually, it really isn't that bad..... The tests are anywhere from 2-100 questions, depending on the test.  And if you go through the steps to become a Dell Service Provider, it can be quite lucrative :D

The machine is a Dell Dimension 8100.  1.3GHz.
It's actually been a pretty good computer, this is the first problem I've had in the almost 4 years that I've owned it.

I have a dell deminsion 4550 2.0 ghz 80 gig hard drive and have had it over a year now. It's on 24/7 and I have never got a virus. I have a really good norton anti-virus program probably one of the best out there. If you had this installed on your computer you would have never got this virus in the first place. I'd be more than happy to send you a cd-rom copy of it if you want.
