AUSTIN, Texas, Nov. 7 — Five Austin police officers have been disciplined for going fishing while they were supposed to be protecting a power plant against possible terrorism.

INTERNAL MEMOS obtained by the Austin American-Statesman indicate the officers were suspended last month for fishing while on duty at the Decker Creek Power Plant on Lake Walter E. Long. A lieutenant and a sergeant were among those suspended for from one to 30 days, the newspaper said.

The memos indicate that the fishing had gone on for a year without action, and that some of the officers ignored orders to stop their angling. A sixth officer — a sergeant — was suspended for not reporting the others. Details on his suspension weren’t available because he’s appealing his punishment.

The report says the officers were spotted in uniform at least once cleaning the fish they had just caught.

“Quite frankly, we are very disappointed,” Assistant Police Chief Rick Coy told the newspaper. “We believe our job is to protect the community, and that’s what we expect our officers to do."
Mike Sheffield, president of the Austin Police Association, told the American Statesman:
“Officers make mistakes.”
