I have a old Voodo3 2000 video card and have lost the setup cd. I want to put it in our extra computer. I installed it and used add hardware, it downloaded the software it said from the ME disc. But it keeps going into default 16bit mode. If I take it out and reboot the video runs fine off the Intel built in video on the board.

Any Help out there? I am of course puter stoopid  :stupid ...

All you need is the driver. Go to their website and plug in the number of your card and download the driver!.

Also you will need to go into "Setup" and "Disable" the on board Video!, piece of cake!.. :good  :good

Video drivers are always a pain in the ass. Never use the ones shipped with the card unless you check the company's website first for later drivers. The different video standards keep the card manufacturers hopping.

Thanks for the help I'll give that a try. Where do you do the enable disable dealio? I think that maybe my only prob, because it seems to download/upload the software/driver but it doesn't know that I want to use it as my default video device.

Usually the enable/disable functions are built into the BIOS setup. When you first boot the computer, you should see something that says "Hit DEL to enter Setup" or verbiage similar. The various BIOS mfg use different keystroke combinations to enter setup. Once in the setup menus, you'll have to poke around a little to find the particular switch. BE VERY CAREFULL AND DON"T CHANGE ANYTHING YOU DON"T UNDERSTAND AS YOU CAN CREATE ALL KINDS OF PROBLEMS FOR YOURSELF  IF YOU CHANGE THE WRONG VALUE. If you have your computer's original manuals you might find the correct steps in it. This varies from motherboard to motherboard mfg. Be carefull!

Here's a link to the instructions for your computer for the BIOS Setup.  http://docs.us.dell.com/docs/systems/dsleest/syssetup.htm#entering_the_system_setup_program

After you hit F2 after booting and you are in setup, you will want to go into the "Integrated Devices" screen.  There you will be able to turn off the onboard video.

Hope this Helps.

Think its safer to hardwire? The computers are close by each other for now.
I'm not messing with the network stuff till I get the vid card working and reformat the drive.

Thanks again

YES!

I remember when I was young sitting there listening to peoples phone calls from their cordless phones on my scanner :D , wireless networking is the same way....it is broadcast on a frequency and fairly easy to intercept if you know what your doing.  Encryption is a definite must with wireless.  But, even with encryption it isn't as safe as good ol' hardwired ethernet.....

Here's another reason why not to go wireless

Here's a little info on the 802.11b (11b) protocol which is the most commonly used wireless networking protocol.....

Frequency Used: 2.4 GHz – This is a fairly crowded span of spectrum. Bluetooth (short-distance wireless data transfer) and 2.4 GHz phones are especially good at disrupting an 11b signal. Microwaves can also have an effect. But the signal can go for a longer distance, and the main concern really are the 2.4 GHz phones.

Myself, I have hardwired all the rooms in our house and thereby have a broadband connection access point anywhere I need to be :jumpie   However,  I am a network Enginner and do this often so it is fairly simple to me.  Not always the case for most end users.

Another viable option as an alternative to wireless and actual hardwiring is something called "Homeplug".  Here's a little info on it.

HomePlug is a networking standard that has been around for a while, and companies are just starting to put out revised versions of the hardware. HomePlug takes advantage of an infrastructure that every house already has: a power grid. Packets are sent over electrical wiring in your house, and that's how the network is created. This is a good idea because plugs are all over every room, so while it's "wired" networking, most of the wires are already built-in and hidden from view in your house!

HomePlug allows approximately 14 Mbps speeds over powerlines in your house, though your mileage may vary. Bandwidth is limited by interference in your home - if someone turns on a hairdryer and the air conditioning kicks in at the same time, the HomePlug equipment must compensate for the sudden power spike and bandwidth is sure to drop. Nevertheless, this is a very convienent way to create a network.

There are two main types of devices that exist on the HomePlug standard: the HomePlug/Ethernet Bridge and the HomePlug USB adapter. For computers without an Ethernet card, plugging in the USB adapter will give the computer the ability to connect to a HomePlug network. For computers with an Ethernet card already (or any Ethernet-enabled device, such as a router), the bridge will turn that Ethernet device into a HomePlug-capable device. Remember what a bridge does - it allows to types of networks to talk to each other; in this case, HomePlug and Ethernet networks. These two devices are the only devices that are needed to create a HomePlug network.

A common setup would be this: from the broadband modem, hook up the HomePlug/Ethernet Bridge to the modem's Ethernet port, then plug it into the wall. Then, for each computer that's to be hooked up to the network, use the bridge or the USB adapter - plug it into the computer and the wall, and bingo! Instant network:

Hope all this helps you in making the right choice for you for your network needs
:good

Another reason why not to go wireless is envronmental conditions.   About 2 years ago I had to go in a completely hardwire a huge home for the CIO of Intel because the wireless network could not travel through the 6" thick cement walls in the house (Spanish style home).  Just another thing to consider....  :)

It belongs to a friend of mine and he don't know anything about it. It boots up but nothing comes up on the monitor. I was wondering if the video card took a shit or if my monitor ain't compatible with that machine???... :stupid

Seriously though, there are so many different ways of doing things with computers and networking, as there is with most things in life.  You just have to look at all the options available and decide which is best for you

Good morning Art.  I have never heard of that company.  There were, and still are, so many mom and pop type companies that it's impossible to keep track of them all.

I have seen numerous times where the monitor is too advanced for the computer.  Howwever, you would usually get some ugly lines on the screen because of the incorrect frequency.  Typically, the newer monitors which support SVGA are backwards compatible with VGA but not vice-versa.  I'd try the monitor on another machine just to verify that it works.  If it does, then look at the video card.....  If you can hear the machine booting and the Hard Drive spinning up, I'd definitely say it is a Video Card Bad.  If you can't hear the hard drive spinning up, then it can be alot of things....RAM,Processor, power supply, motherboard, CPU Fan (seen that one alot), etc.

Another thing that can knock out the video is if the ribbon cables to the drives (HDD,FDD,CD ROM, etc) are not hooked up correctly..... :break

Yeah that's my thoughts too, the monitor is my work unit so I know it's good. I don't get anything, it's just as if it wasn't turned on. Everything else seems to be working. I can't change video card because it's a PCI, all I have is AGP and there's not even an AGP slot in it. If it was mine, I'd strip the thing and keep all the screws and shit can the thing but he wants to try and fix it!..Here's their site!....

They are located in Mesa and their phone number is listed on the website.  I would think that you could cll them and/or go over to their office and they could answer all of your questions.  They should have a build sheet for that computer based on the serial number.
