For over a hour most of LHC lost electricity. Even My place was without power.
Arizona’s state mammal — a ringtail cat — was the cause of a major power outage Monday night in Lake Havasu City. About 12,700 customers on mostly the south side of town were without power for more than an hour, a spokesman for UniSource Energy Services said Tuesday. After circuit breakers opened up at the Black Mesa Substation south of the city, UniSource was unable to restore power remotely from its dispatch center in Kingman. Linemen were immediately dispatched to the substation, where they found a dead ringtail cat lying across insulators on the 69 KV conductors. Owls and roadrunners have caused outages in Lake Havasu City in the past. Tom Pearce, UniSource district engineer, said this was the first incident involving a ringtail cat. “We are going to find a wildlife expert to see if there is anything we can do,†Pearce said. “We don’t want these animals getting killed.†According to the Arizona Game and Fish Department’s Web site, ringtails have long, slender bodies from 4 to 16 inches in length. Ringtail cats are mainly nocturnal animals and are described as being extremely bold and unconcerned about the presence of humans. Actually members of the raccoon family, ringtail cats typically have seven or eight rings on their long tails. They are not endangered.
