I'm ready to share with you all the gift I gave myself and my loved ones, including HD & the KH's, for Christmas...

I QUIT SMOKING

I quit the day after christmas and have not had a smoke since.  I won't lie and say it has not been the hardest thing ever, but I had to do it.

How I did it...

I wrote out a plan.  I had a goal that was bigger than just quiting smoking, and a part of that goal required me to quit smoking as one of the steps in the plan.

I gave myself two quit dates, a hard date (12/31/03 and a soft date 12/25/03).  I logged the times of each cigarette I smoked.  I tracked that and concentrated on the tougher times.  I cut back one smoke p/day until my goal dates.  So that by 12/30/03 I would smoke my one and only last cigarette.  With the dates I chose I had to purchase one more pack of smokes between my soft cut off date and my hard cut off date.  When I ran out of smokes the day after my soft cut off date, I just decided to not buy that last pack.  I knew if I didn't quit then, I would not be able to.

Now, I must also share that I had my doc give me an antidepresant to help with the crankiness, which for the most part works, but I still get cranky, but not as bad as I did the first time I quit.

I use to smoke menthol so I eat mints like they are going out of style.  When I feel that need I just take a deep breath and hold it.  It gives me that minty taste I was use to and feel like I'm smoking.  It's been getting better and better every day.  :D   I might be cranky and insecure for a few months, but at least it is temperary and I will live a longer life with the people I love in the end.  (Assuming I don't get hit by a car) :D

Oh, I forgot to mention that I started with a carton of smokes and separated the packs with the amount of cigaretts I could smoke for that day for each day of my plan.  When I got towards the end, I started to cheet and smoke my cigarettes that were to get me through the last day of my hard cut off date, well, that's when I decided not to buy that last pack, I figured, I smoked them early, so I lost them.  :D

Another thing I had to do was change the way I thought about them.  I had to make myself realilze that they are as bad as a drug and would I want someone doing drugs or abusing alcohol in my life?  The answer was no... I don't so how could I ask someone else to accept this drug into thier life let alone any children they have?  And I also had to ask myself would I want to marry someone that I know is going to die a long agonizing death?  Again, I had to answer no.,  So... Basically I had to change my way of thinking.

Good luck.  And if you relaps.. remember this... Don't think "oh well, I smoked so I guess I couldn't quit" BS... you can quit, just give yourself a new cut off date.  And keep doing this until eventually it takes.  Also I think it helps to get the drugs from your doc.

That tells you how long I've been out of the loop.  I didn't even know you quit.  Congrats.

I do feel better.  Just a little tired and cranky, but I'll be okay soon.  :)

Thanks for your encouragment.  :)

Congrats Mary!!! :good I've been smoking for 18 years and don't have the wil power to quit. I smoke over a pack a day. Don't think I will even ever think about quiting. I just enjoy it to much, and still feel great.

Congrats to all you smokers turned non-smokers! My Dad smoked virtually all of his life, quit about a zillion times, and was still a smoker on the day of his passing. I sincerely wish you guys all the luck and offer ya'll a "BIG-ASS OL' HIGH FIVE" for jobs well done! :good

Congrats 2 the both of you. I would like 2 stop smoking. I have been thinking about it. Just trying 2 diet and stop smoking at the same time would be really hard on me. Plus I have a VERY stressful job in the medical field. SOOOO hopefully one day I will stop smoking for good.

I am sure glad both Mrs Scuba and I never picked up the habbit. It sounds like its a biatch to give up. Although I will take a drag here & there when I am super loaded.  :D
