Hey everyone,

I am new to the boards and boating. I was wondering if I might get some of your opinions on a boat for my family?

Last summer we went by Lake Havasu and saw all this crazy fun going on out there and we definately want to get into it. We already do the desert thing with quads and motorcycles. This looks like the next step. Since my kids are teenagers, we want a bowrider with enough room to bring friends. Now comes the hard part, choosing one.

I have only had time to look at these boats but would consider looking at others if anyone thinks I should.

Chaparral - Nice quality. Well thought out.
Ultra - Wow do these look nice.
Maxum - Ok
Bayliner -
Yamaha - AR230 Looks like a winner. Great features and price.

I am looking to be on lakes like Havasu and Powell. I want to be able to wake board and waterski. I want it to be comfortable just hanging out with everyone laying all over the place. I want it to be reliable and look good. I want it to have good resale value down the road. (Do custom boats retain higher resale value than factory boats? ) I want it to have good power out of the hole and mid range speed.

Also, I want to store it in Lake Havasu. Anyone have any tips on good places? Inside storage with 24 hour access would be nice.

Any rate, I look forward to seeing what you all have to say.

Thanks,

Ken

Welcome Dougs place ..

The 23.6 is a great boat for what you want. You may want to go to the boat show and look arond at all the boat in one place....

Welcome Ken.   :good

Look around on the boards, someone is always selling a boat, like this one on River Rat Life .

Most people around here will tell you to stay away from the mass produced boats (Sea Ray, Bayliner, Maxum, ect...).

for your first boat-if you are totaly new-get a beater. get through the learning curve and then spend the big bucks on something nice. those mass produced boats DO NOT keep their resale value at all. Ultra claims the highest re sale value
right now. the 24/7 a really nice ride. i'd look in the boat trader mags now and every week till you get a feel for the market. when looking at top speed calculate in a bullshit factror of 5 -15%. also STAY AWAY from under powered boats-you'll be sorry. oh, and never never never by a used boat with out taking it out in the water and running the shit out of it first. and most of all HAVE FUN!!! :D

I can't really give you any good advise about purchasing a boat, but I can welcome you to HD's :jumpie

I do have to say I like boardsmnj's advise.  Plus, the longer you shop (look through the magazines) the more you will learn.  :)   Good luck... Hope to see you post more on the boards.   :comp

Well I am on the fence with buying a used beater. Maybe a nice used boat. I take care of my stuff pretty good and keep it for a long time so I can get my money out of it. I can't tell you how many times I have bought something on the cheap only to go back to buy the better one. Sometimes its a waste of money.

The only reason I am looking at mass produced boats is the access to the boat with walk thru transoms and swim decks. I have a couple of people in my family who are physically challenged and would not be able to crawl over the back end of the boat easily. Do any custom boat manufacturers offer a walk through transom? That would be the best of both worlds.
Its not an absolute thing I gotta have but it is part of my list of things I am looking at.

Top speed is not a big deal. If I could get to 50 or 60 that would probably be fine. I do hear you though on horsepower. Hate to need it and not have it.

Thanks for the input.

Ken
