Havasu gas prices among state’s highest By Mark Hall As gas prices continue to climb around Arizona, Lake Havasu City’s remain among the highest. According to AAA Arizona, Lake Havasu City had the highest gas prices as of last Friday, at $1.74 per gallon for regular unleaded. “You guys have probably the most expensive gas in the state. Your location has a lot to do with that,†said Kim Pappas-Miller, public information officer for AAA Arizona. “The tank farms are in Phoenix. The further away from the fuel source (the more it’s going to cost.†However, Pappas-Miller said she believes Scottsdale’s prices may have exceeded Lake Havasu City’s prices Monday by a couple of cents. The main reason gas prices have increased locally and statewide, she said, is due to recent problems in California — Arizona receives 70 percent of its gasoline from the neighboring state. She said a recent problem at one California refinery, and a rumor of problems at another, drove up prices in that state 30 percent Friday. “Everything that affects California, affects us,†Pappas-Miller said. “We’re kind of the ugly step-sister.†Pappas-Miller said the other main contributor to rising gas prices —supply out-gaining demand — is more of an ongoing problem. “Demand has grown beyond our ability to produce that gasoline. Now, we’re getting into the busy drive time,†she said. “Demand will go up and that will inevitably affect the gas prices.†Andrea Esquer, spokeswoman for the Arizona Attorney General’s Office, said a recent decision by OPEC to cut production by a third has affected that supply-demand model. Additionally, she said gas farms in Phoenix are switching over their stock from winter blend to summer blend, which always slightly drives up the prices. “If we didn’t have the OPEC issue we would see a small increase in the prices,†Esquer said. The recent gas price hikes come at a time when many Arizona winter visitors are starting to make their exodus from the state. However, Pappas-Miller said that is not driving prices. Attorney General Terry Goddard is pushing legislation at the current session in Phoenix that would make price gouging during emergencies — such as the broken pipeline last year — illegal. There are no current laws that address price gouging. “The price gouging wouldn’t have any impact during the current situation,†Esquer said. Although, she said the Attorney General’s Office is asking state residents to report companies that seem to be raising prices quicker and higher than others. “That then gives us information that there is something going on in that area. Sometimes that makes them aware that people are watching them,†Esquer said. The Arizona Attorney General’s Office can be reached at (602) 542-5025, or at its Web site, www.ag.state.az.us.
