Quote (Bullitt Bob @ June 20 2004,8:46 pm) | I swear, that's what it looks like outside my front door right now! Â A fire started on the mountain 4 days ago and it was almost out yesterday morning.
Today, it just exploded and going nuts! There's about 400 firefighters and several helicopters working it as we speak. |
That's what it looked like here in our neck of the woods too a week or so ago. Now it just looks ALL BLACK

A good portion of Nevada wildfires are fought by prisoners. I don't think they'll be rakin' in the dough. |
The prisoners won't but guess who wiill!..

Quote (Sleek-Jet @ June 22 2004,9:24 pm) | The money in Firefighting (wildland anyway) is trucks. Â Tankers and pumpers. Â I met a couple guys when the fires were raging in Durango a couple years ago that were pulling in upwards of 300,000 per truck per year. Â I believe the going rate was 500.00 a day, just to have the truck available, then a set rate per hr when it was used. Â Both had new trucks that were already paid for, so everthing was gravey. Â
They could make several thousand a day easy. Â All you need is a truck and be certified by the forest service. Â That and spend 6 mo (and prime boating season) living in a tent/motel/camper where the fires are. |
Time to buy a truck!.

Quote (BigBoyToys @ June 21 2004,6:10 am) | [/quote] Yep, there's already been a few nice size brush fires up here. Â The Height of fire season is what, August? Â Man, this is gonna be a long summer for the firefighters thanks to a VERY dry March and April |
So. Cal (San Diego, Riverside and San Bernadino) just went to a year round fire season. The significance is that there is now funding from the state to keep augment staffing and "seasonal" firefighters year round. Traditionally the season runs from around late May - October for most of the state. So Cal has been running from April - Jan. We were seeing fuel moisture levels in April that typically aren't seen until August/September. We have already had 2 significant fires in RivCo already. The Eagle Fire in Temecula and The Cerrito Fire in Corona. Those totalled over 15,000 acres and occurred in May when things are supposed to be pretty moist still. It's gonna be a long summer, lets all try to be careful. ALthough the OT is good I woulld rather be home with my family and friends
