Man seriously hurt in SR 95 crash
By L.J. Frink and Mark Hall Monday, August 2, 2004 10:22 PM MDT
News-Herald Photo/L.J. Frink A Department of Public Safety officer looks over the wreckage of a 1982 Ford Ranger XLT pickup truck that was involved in Monday's State Route 95 accident, which seriously injured the driver. A head-on collision Monday between a tractor-trailer and a Ford Ranger pickup truck on State Route 95 about four miles south of Interstate 40 left one man with life-threatening injuries.
Emergency personnel at the scene said the 35-year-old man received massive injuries after the 1982 Ford Ranger pickup truck he was driving struck a rig pulling an enclosed trailer. DPS officers said initial investigation revealed that the Ranger was northbound when it veered into the southbound lane and struck the large truck, which was traveling in that lane.
Investigators said they don't know why the truck swerved into the other lane.
The tractor-trailer continued to travel southward until it ran off the road and collided with the wall of a wash east of the highway. The Ranger skidded off the road and came to rest on the shoulder, also east of the highway.
The Ranger's front end was severely damaged - the engine was knocked out and landed about 15 yards away from where the vehicle came to rest.
The driver of the Ranger was airlifted via Native Air to University Medical Center in Las Vegas.
The male driver of the tractor-trailer didn't appear to suffer any injuries but was transported to Havasu Regional Medical Center as a precaution, authorities said.
Dawn Springborn, an off-duty nurse with Native Air and a Fort Mohave resident, missed the accident by about 30 seconds, she said. She helped treat the driver of the Ranger until emergency personnel arrived.
"I was on my way to work an extra shift when I saw a big explosion. I said 'Oh (expletive), there's a car on fire,'" Springborn said. The driver of the tractor-trailer was able to exit his vehicle before it burst into flame, which was extinguished by the Desert Hills fire crew. However, the entire cab was destroyed.
The Ranger also caught on fire, which was put out by bystanders, said Mat Espinoza, Desert Hills fire chief.
The collision occurred about 10:45 p.m. and stalled traffic traveling in both directions for more than three hours. It is still under investigation.
