Just saw this on the news. I can't believe how out of touch with reality today's school systems are.
Teen Suspended Over Civil War Weapon
Wed Oct 13, 9:46 AM ET Top Stories - AP
PINE BUSH, N.Y. - A teen-age Civil War buff has been suspended from school and faces serious charges after his replica musket was found in his car trunk at school in the Orange County community of Pine Bush.
Joshua Phelps had been at a re-enactment with his Civil War costume, including a musket last week. He threw the uniform and equipment into his truck and forgot about it. Yesterday a security guard at the Pine Bush High School saw it and called police.
Phelps was sitting in study hall when the security guard told him to go to the assistant principal. When he was told they saw the rifle he wasn't concerned - thinking they would understand it's part of his costume.
But it didn't happen that way. Town of Crawford Police were called and Phelps was cuffed and charged with a misdemeanor charge of criminal possession of a weapon.
His mother, Valerie Michaels, is outraged, saying the school has blown this thing way out of proportion. She says also in the trunk was a costume, shoes, leather belt, powder keg, and a leather cartridge box.
Phelps used the costume when taking part of the re-enactment of the Battle of Chancellorville which was staged by the 124th New York State Volunteers. The re-enactors say they are models of the unit that came from Orange County and fought in the Civil war. High School students were recruited to take part in the re-enactors club. Phelps' mother questions why give the students fake guns and then arrest them.
Pine Bush School Superintendent RoseMarie Stark called the incident a student discipline matter and declined to comment further.

So was it a replica or was it fake? Some replicas are non-firing, but some are firing. The ones they use at the Civil War re-enactments behind my house are firing. They use a type of blank. If it was a firing replica, then IMO the school had every right to suspend him, and he's lucky if he doesn't get expelled. A high schooler should know better than to bring a firing gun to school. Duh!!!
Of course, if it's non-firing, then the punishment is harsh. Suspension, yes, call the police, no.

Well, other stories on it have said that it was a fake, non-operable musket.
Here's another BS Suspension;
Foul-Mouthed Teen May Go to Jail
Mon Oct 11, 7:37 PM ET Â Strange News - AP WILMINGTON, N.C. - A teenager may go to jail for using foul language with a high school teacher. Glenn Gattis and his parents don't deny that he cursed or has had other disciplinary problems at Ashley High School. But they say the misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct is an overreaction. The 17-year-old Gattis says he became frustrated and used bad language when he got in trouble for being late to class again. He said he was ultimately stopped by deputies working as school resource officers, who gave him a citation for using language meant to provoke violence. He was also suspended for three days. Gattis' mother, Judy Lewis, said she could understand if her son had to serve detention at school. But he could get up to 30 days in jail. The family has hired a lawyer to fight the charge. School officials declined to comment.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for disciplining kids when the needs arises. But they should let the parents do the disciplining, not the Government. Hell, as a parent nowdays, you can't even spank a child anymore without worrying about being charged with child abuse. What's wrong with today's society, is that the Government took raising children out of the parents hands, and took the responsibility on itself. I remember when I was in High School. I had a Gunsmithing class (which I know of absolutely none in High Schools nationwide now), and I took a shotgun into school for a restore project. It was no big deal, nobody got hurt or threatened, or felt threatened by it, and I ended up with what was the equivalent of a new shotgun. Try and do that in Today's Government controlled society...
