First.....let me introduce myself.
I'm from Fond du Lac, WI.  home of the Mercury Marine motor.
I do custom painting and the sticker deal also

I see some awsome boats and babes here, kudos to all.

I'm curious........
How many of you have had your boat painted by a custom painter, or vinyl graphics added by a sign shop. What did you pay and what would you consider a fair cost.

Probable best to post a pic and the price,

Of course I'm expecting an expert with the initials HDF to jump in and guide the issue

Thanx and keep er wet

Welcome Lone_Wolf_Grafx to the HD Forums! :good

I don't know all 900+ members here, but hopefully some of them will respond to this thread.

I know of at least 1 paint pro here with the screen name Jetboat Brian out of Atlanta, Georgia.  I know there are a bunch more that do it as a hobby out of their garages.

We got a few vinyl guys here including me. :D  I'm very small scale though, but there are a couple of pros here.  One that comes to mine is h2oski2fast.  He does some pretty elaborate vinyl jobs including complete hull wraps. :good

Everyone is welcome to share their expertise here so hopefully a few peeps can benefit. :D

Thanx Doug,

I don't want to mis lead anyone, I don't do custom paint for a living, but I'm hoping I can in the future.

I too hope we can get some of the gurus to jump in and add to this post.

There's a bunch of amatuer painters here.  I don't consider myself one of them, but even I painted a truck in my driveway and it came out pretty good. :D

LWG I looked into it a year or so ago and was working with a company out of Canada who would do a whole boat for around $300-$400.
They were featured in HOTBOAT or Family & Performance Boating......the name slips the brain now but I'll look at the shop. Oh which is in Franklin, WI by the way!

I may be looking to get my boat upholstered and painted. What does it normally cost for a custom paint job?

Like Doug said, I do vinyl graphics. I have also done custom painting, thats how I got into the sign business. As for pricing, it really depends on the job and the area you're in.

Here's a few things I've done:

35' Fountain, printed vinyl on side and hand lettered stripes above the cap.

Before:

After:

21' Calabria, vinyl wrapped

Before:

After:

31' Formula, die cut vinyl w/airbrushed highlights and fades.

Boat Name, die cut vinyl w/ airbrushed fades

Gatorz Eyewear's Trailer, both printed and die cut vinyl

I don't do much painting, but here is one of the more recent things I painted. Club Car golf cart.

Last is a Porsche GT3 cup race car, all done in printed vinyl. The car came to me all white w/ painted mirrors, all other color is vinyl.

PM me if you want to know the prices for each of these jobs. Thanks Doug for letting me know about this thread, as you know I'm always willing to put in my 2 cents.

Thanx Dennis,

Nice stuff, looks awesome.

Sorry it took me so long to get back to my post.

I lost the addy.

I don't do printed stuff, and I'm not sure what die cut is other than actually cutting with a die, shape wise that is. I'm not sure what is die cut on the boats.

I have a 36" plotter, but still wondering what you mean by die cut.

Do you have a website.

I have a half ass site at
http://www.excel.net/~clewis/lonewo~1.htm

not all that current though.

Dennis doesn't have a site yet, but he told me just a couple of nights ago that he may build one soon. :good

Lone Wolf, you have some quality stuff on your site as well. :good

BTW, I always thought that "Die Cut" was a custom "Die" stamping out the cut in the vinyl as opposed to being cut from a plotter.  Like if you were to produce MANY of the same stickers, it may be cost efficient to make a die rather than use the plotter that many times. :)

Thanx Doug,

Ya, as fer the die cut. That's what I was thinking also. But I would think that it would take a ton of stickers to justify the die set.. Maybe sticker dies are different from the ones I'm thinking of. My Dad was a tool & die maker. Hell I even have a 7 tonner in my shop. But not for stickers.

When I was at the sign shop ordering these PRINTED stickers , the subject came up regarding cutting mass amounts of stickers from a die.  They told me when it would be cost efficient to do, but I don't recall how many that would be.

I cut these myself. :D

I have always concidered using a plotter as die cut, for the simple reason that it is much easier to explain to people (ie. if you were to tell the customer it is cut with a plotter, they look at you kinda funny and then you have to explain). The Folmula was all cut on my 30" Roland plotter, then painted with fades where needed and clear coated. I went with a 30" plotter because of the availablility of that size vinyl, and I very rarely have need for a bigger size. If I need a bigger size I have a couple of places that I can out source to.

Yes I am in the process of building a website. My business consists of Signs and Graphics as well as graphics design for web and print (full color flyers, business cards, postcards, trifolds and things like that). Here are a couple of websites I have done:

Hillbank Motor Corporation

OCCarParts.com
