So we had a great trip, boat was kewl, things rollin smooth, leave the lake about 2pm to get home around 5pm, NOT

I shreaded the one tire( who knows when) the rim was pretty beat up and when it came apart it took the wood on the fender and moved it enough so it rubbed on the inner sidewall of the front tire so it went flat also.

Drama, forgot my frikin spare, but big deal I needed 2 spares and I'm about an hour from Tucson on a Sunday evening :(
I call up my Son, "Get my spare and bring it to me"  He calls back "Hey dad it's flat" I tell him to take it to Pep Boys their open till 6pm its about 5pm now.So he gets there and the tire is junk it wont seal on the rim, sh!t, ok buy a tire, no wait buy 2 and I'll leave the boat and bring the other rim home (Pep Boys had no rims or I would have got one from them)and we'll mount the tire at home (old school hand tools) OK so then I get home about 7pm get the tire mounted and I can't get the beads to seat they are to close together. Panic sets in, no way am I leaving my boat where it is. I remember about an actually service station that might be open on Sunday late, Becky calls them, kewl their open, get there about 8pm, air up the tire and we're off.

All goes well and we hit home around 10pm    :angry Needless to say I have 2 spares now and they won't be forgotten again,Becky will make sure of that   :eek

Well at least it's a story that you can tell. :D  I think I better get a spare though.  I've never had one.  I always tried to believe that plugs were enough.  This is a case where they would have been useless. :eek

Hey AZKC, Next time you need to set the bead on a tire and have a problem try this. Lay the tire flat on the ground with the open bead facing up. Spray starting fluid in the tire around the bead and throw I said throw a match on it. It will instantly set both beads. The tire will be ready to inflate. Be very, very cafefull. We use to have to do this to set the sand paddles on the sandrails.

Now that would be a picture!!

KC, looks like you have the exact same trailer as mine.  You have any problems (other than the tires on this trip) with it?

Its a Roadrunner, original equipment with the boat back in 1979, a little wimpy but it gets it to the water and back. I cant decide to rebuild and fix it or just replace it and make it into a flat bed utility trailer.

Evidently someone lost the title to mine at some point.  It just says "trailer" on it now.

I've always heard roadrunners were pretty good trailers.  You need some chrome smoothies like I've got, really cool then. :D

That's what it had, but over the years they popped off and got lost, going with chrome mods like on my truck next. Probably tomorrow, BC won't let me go to the lake till a address the trailer/spares issues ;)

spares good.  another option.  chain(s) and small jack.  done it many times.  take the wheel off, jack the axle up, chain it around the frame using some rags to prevent paint scratching(chain with bolts, washers), down the road.  lost a tire one time in cajon pass on the way to the river, said f**k it, put the chain on and ran it all the way there and all the way home.  just another option when you don't have a spare with (or only one spare).   :)

That option was explained to me when I got my boat 12 years ago.  That's why I haven't got a spare yet.  Instead of a chain, which I didn't have, I always planned on using a come-a-long (hand winch) to hold the axle to the frame.  The problem is I don't carry one in my new truck. :eek  I think I'll get a spare soon.  :)

I was going to try that, then I noticed the other tire leaking pretty bad. We also talked after we made it home that I could have taken out the front axle(4 bolts) and rolled home on just the rear axle. I was pretty stressed so my thought process was in the shiter.
I'm going with 2 spares from now on, we have to tow a long way(3-4hrs) and there are no services to speak of.
