No kidding!!  He must have known Kelly Johnson then, pretty cool.

No there is now significance, other then there is no cooler sound then 2 V12 Allisons at full song during a high speed low altitude pass!! :D  :D

That P38 is Lefty Gardner's White Lightning.  I was at Reno one of the last years he was there.  In the middle Lyle Shelton, Tiger Destafini, Bill Hannah and all the other high dollar operations was Lefty in an old travel trailer.  The guys in his pit were standing around talking to the crowd, having a good time.  My kind of operation.

I have always wanted to go to those races but have not made it yet.

My grandfather was at the skunk works when it was in its infancy up until the late 60’s. I don’t know if he knew Kelly Johnson but I bet that he did. It was a small group in the beginning. I wish he was still alive I would love to pick his brain about the old days.

Reno is definitely a spectacle.  Anybody who's a gear head or a race fan needs to go at least once.

Have you read the book "Skunk Works" by Ben Rich?  An excellent book and it goes into the history of the Skunk Works from about the mid-50's till the early 90's.

My parents met while building planes together at North American Aviation in the 50's.  She quit and he stayed for 37 years retiring from Rockwell International.  :)

Doug, did they work on the commercial or military side of the company?

It was the military side, but I don't remember specifically what planes.  I think that plant was in Torrance or somewhere near there.  My dad transferred to the "Autonetics" division in Anaheim in the 60's.  His group designed missle guidance systems.  It was always cool to go to "open house" and see his work.  He brought home alot of pictures of cool stuff too.  :cool   Much of it was stuff from Apollo and the early days of the Space Shuttle.
