Has anyone ever drawn a spring or a coil in 3D? Or flattened a conical shape once it was drawn in 3D?

Just curious. Like for example, If you have a sphere or a globe and I wanted to print the world on it, I would need to set up my graphic file a certain way so that when we put it together it would fit on there. You know in the front of an encyclopedia where they have a flatten view of the world, How do you do that?

Kinda like a sheet metal drawing?? you can draw that out and then flatten it for the pattern.   I dont have anything about that in the books I have but I have seen that stuff.  We can flatten conical and coil stuff but you want to put something on it then lay it flat?? I think the sheet metal pattern idea might work.My Webpage

I draw springs and coils all the time. I usually draw a cross section of the part and rotate it around a line (the center of the spring) with an offset angle.

As far as flattening a Sphere I am not sure the easiest way to do that. I think that blown is on the right track. Some time ago I had some software for sheet medal work that would flatten the part so you could get the shape you need to stamp before all the bends are made. I would think that it would work for you.

Did any of that make sense?

Miller- That does make sense. Next time I have to draw one of these strange items you guys will be hearing from me. This sounds wierd but, it's easier to build these structures then to draw them.
