Wow, He did not indicate to me he was in that game....although when I wrote him to say I had sold he was surprised but not overwhelmingly....and now that I think back at what he said it makes sense. He had mentioned to me that he needed to expand again, according to BMW, even though he just built a new store just a handfull of years ago........get this: One week after he'd opened his new store BMW sent a letter demanding the signs be upgraded to the newest design!!!! Fricken signs were a week old. Thats the stupid crap we've had to deal with. Owners name is Pete Cunningham, probably one of the nicest car dealers I know, outside of myself of course . There is and has been a wave of dealerships sold in the last few years. Demands from the factory, particularly with facilities, have become rather extreme so some of the medium to small stores can't see a RIO. Then the best alternative is to sell to those that have the wherewithall to fullfill the factory demands. I myself could not see investing $15mil or more, continue dealing with the stress and worry that my investment may not pan out and loose everything. In my opinion, the factory has gotten way to demanding but when they are riding the top of the wave they can get away with it. My prediction is BMW will end up with too many publicly owned stores that have tons of capital and may soon find they will be outnumbered. At nearly the same time I sold my "little" store two HUGE stores in the LA area sold too, so the pressure from BMW not only has effected small stores but the big ones too.....owners are tired of getting pushed around. . I'm gonna have to give Pete a call and see whats what.

Quote (AZKC @ Oct. 19 2007,11:06 am) | He's got Saab  Where in New Mexico? With his other stuff
And Saab and GM are kissin cousins
Man I've been out of the loop to long |
50% of the Saab car division was purchased by GM in 1991, they then had the option in  2001 to buy the 2nd 50%, which they did. Although most of the Saabs are still designed by Saab peeps a few brand blendings have occured. Saab 9-2x was a slightly reskinned Subaru Outback. Saab 9-7x is a fully re-engineered Trailblazer/Envoy (its what Jan drives) . Overall its been a good marraige with GM mainly for its global buying power, so the cost of building a Saab has dropped tremendously. . Saab, or more appropriately Scania, is a leading builder of large semi trucks and passenger busses, the high dollar touring type of busses. Also a leader in aircraft building, passenger and more dominately in the fighter plane arena. Actually a very diversified company. . . . Mackey's BMW store used to be in the same building with Saab before he built the new place......previous to his ownership it was called Grand Prix Motors.

I did a few years in auto part stores but was never able to get into a dealership. I got into a dealership doing PDI in hopes to get into the parts counter but never could. I laugh at the parts stores now. If their computers go down I would put money that they would not know how to crack a book to look up a part.
