I know nothing about beemers, but I've had the same problem on my F-350 because of a cracked vacuum tube.  Once I found and fixed the leak, it worked fine. :)

That happened on my Windstar 2 years ago. Took it in and they wanted $1000 labor to replace a $50 part. Never mind. 2 weeks later it fixed itself and has been working since.

Ford products are well known for the vacuum leak problems with the vents.

I've started a little research :comp  but no real answers yet :stupid

It could be the servo motor has given up, or an animal is in there trapped and blocking the flaps, the flap itself could have broken and jambed or maybe just some debris is caught up in it.
Look in as deep as you can from the intake but if something is wrong internally then removal of the heater/vent assembly inside the car may need neccessary....not a fun task whatsoever.

The Astro van we had did something similar. But would only blow out to the floor and bake your toe's. There was a real small diamater nylon tube that went from a vacume pot, to a rubber hose that went through the firewall into the dash. That tube had been cooked near the t-stat housing and crumbled. Once I replaced that nylon tube with a rubber line all was as good as new.  :good

You should see the Bimmer forums they are all over the place with this problem :banghead Seems kinda common but nobody will spill the fix, they just keep coming back with stuff like air in the system or you don't have your settings right. When you search the problem there are pages and pages of people with problems and no fixes :rolleyes

You can spend $6000 a year on repairs or just buy one and have $500 payments - whatever makes you sleep easier. lol  :D

Well its not fixed but it does heat the car, just only from the dash vents or defroster. Its a daylight kinda job so I'll have to wait for the weekend to start tearing stuff apart :break

But I am working on the Suburban's heater, its got a plugged heater core and a bad blend door motor, but thats a whole nother thread in its self :banghead  :D

Actually almost the opposite, the blend door acuator is in front and comes out in about 20 minutes, I did that last night. The heater core, if I end up having to change it out (going to try flushing it out first) is an all day event it looks like :cry

I'm betting its something simple. One of the funnier problems is the "I can't get hot air out of the dash vents" Theres a little wheel in the middle of the dash that has to be on the red to get heat out of the vents :stupid Its some BMW safety thing to help keep drivers awake :rolleyes  and its different from USA cars to Overseas cars :alien
