Quote (Ziggy @ Dec. 13 2007,11:15 am) | What language are you guys speaking? It all sounds greek to me.... I had a harddrive get real noisy so I had them install another one and "ghost" the entire drive onto the new one...left the old one in the machine but disconnected that way I won't loose and if the new one craps out I still have 90% or more of all my stuff I can plug back into... |
It's always a good move to replace a noisy drive. They are cheap enough these days for EVERYONE to have one to back up to though. Zig, is this computer in your house or business? In the old days, in was a pain in the ass to back up data so most people didn't. While off site storage of back up data is the most secure, it can cost some money. This would protect you if your building burned down though.
For only the cost of a drive, Windows XP can back up ALL of your data automatically on a regular basis. You can back up to a second internal drive or in my case, an external drive. I have it scheduled to completely back up EVERYTHING once a week and on the off days, it backs up only what changed that day.
In my case, to restore my data today, I first restored my last complete backup (Tuesday), then my daily backup for Wednesday, then my daily backup for Thursday.

It was my office computer. Most of the stuff I'd loose if a catastrophy hit would be personal. 99% of our biz stuff is on a remote server in Utah. Before we switch management systems we'd do a backup every night onto tapes from the in house server.
Ain't life Grand? Treat it that way. The Love of my Life, Jan.

I really like the USB Externals...very economical these days... Monthly backups, just to be safe, and to clean-up lots of "junk" that collects on the home PCs...
