Well, my hard drive crashed this morning on my desktop computer running Windows XP Pro.  It will not even let me boot to the Last Known Good Configuration. :break

Thank goodness that I back up my data daily to an external hard drive. :good

Right now, I am going through the Automated System Recovery process which is reformatting my entire hard drive. :eek

The safer way would have been to run it with a new drive, but the store was closed early this morning. :eek  Hopefully the backed up data is good. :)

Same thing happened to me (twice) a few weeks ago Doug  :break

Fortunately I had a new, unused drive here in the office. Took the old one out installed the new one and the OS and connected the old one as a slave. All my data was intact. The boot sector was bad on the old one.

Then the same thing happened to my daughter's computer at home. Luckily, I had an entire computer just sitting there and it took all of 10 minutes to throw her old drive into the new machine.  :good

I'm glad it worked out for you. :good

So far so good on my end. :) In my case, I am TOTALLY dependent on the backup as I just reformatted my hard drive. :eek It's do or die now. :rolleyes

What language are you guys speaking? It all sounds greek to me....
I had a harddrive get real noisy so I had them install another one and "ghost" the entire drive onto the new one...left the old one in the machine but disconnected that way I won't loose and if the new one craps out I still have 90% or more of all my stuff I can plug back into...

If they left Ghost installed, use it to back-up your files to an external drive. It has a great recovery program (Ghost that is) :good

It's always a good move to replace a noisy drive. :good  They are cheap enough these days for EVERYONE to have one to back up to though. Zig, is this computer in your house or business? :stupid  In the old days, in was a pain in the ass to back up data so most people didn't.  While off site storage of back up data is the most secure, it can cost some money.  This would protect you if your building burned down though.

For only the cost of a drive, Windows XP can back up ALL of your data automatically on a regular basis.  You can back up to a second internal drive or in my case, an external drive.  I have it scheduled to completely back up EVERYTHING once a week and on the off days, it backs up only what changed that day.

In my case, to restore my data today, I first restored my last complete backup (Tuesday), then my daily backup for Wednesday, then my daily backup for Thursday.  :)

It was my office computer. Most of the stuff I'd loose if a catastrophy hit would be personal. 99% of our biz stuff is on a remote server in Utah.
Before we switch management systems we'd do a backup every night onto tapes from the in house server.
