When they first arrived in lake Michigan the source was given as a foreign ships ballast water, supposedly from the North sea. It was not known how bad until the water intake grids for Chicago had to be cleaned by divers, the mussels were shuting of the flow of water. Next place they showed up was on the Mississippi. And they will cling to anything. Have pulled up old fishing line from the river, the line will be covered with them. Our biggest problem here is keeping them out of the inland lakes. All the boat landings have warnings from the DNR to flush tanks and flush engines. Adding to our problem is all the pro bass and walleye tournaments here, boats from all over, so it componds it. The last I heard the mussel has to have dirty or contaminated water(Mississippi famous for mud and sediment), eventually the mussel cleans the water to the point they start dying off, there has been some evidence of it where I live, but its a long process. For any of you that store your boats in the water, the major bottom paint people make antifouling paints that help your drives keep cleaner. Just educate your boaters and I know water is in short supply out there, but helps if you have a source of water to clean off your boat on the ramp. One other thing, for you that store your boats in the water, these things grow fast, so when your kids are climbing back on your boat maybe using a ladder, the ladder could have them on it and as I said are very sharp, will cut feet or hands.
now, be lucky that is all you have to worry about, we are now faced with flying carp(((no joke))), imagine traveling at 50+ mph and have a 20lb fish hit you in the head or other parts of your body, its happening and people are getting hurt. talking about some sort of electronic net acrosse the Mississippi down along the Illinois border..shows how important it is to keep transient boats clean,,and remember this crap is all coming from other waters on the globe, they are not native,,so another benefit from foreign trade.
Live for today, don't get caught, tomorrow may be further away than you think..
