Quote (Purple Jurk @ Jan. 03 2008,6:22 am) | Hey Art On my Southwind the molding that covers the seem has came off about 1 1/2 foot long on the drivers side, It is riveted on and a freind of mine said that I should just put screws back in and forget about rivets. Would they be better or worse? I think that if they were better they would have put them in first place. |
Don't use screws they'll come out in no time, use rivets but you'll have to use the washers for a backup plate since the holes are worn out, that or drill new holes next to the old ones but still use washers in behind!..

Is there one certain place that it happens? Mine is always on the drivers side just about where the dash starts! |
Mine has happened all the way around, but it has happened more on the drivers side. I think that's because I use that side to tie up to docks. Â I don't have any cleats on the boat, but I use the base of my drivers side air horn as my first tie up point and my ski tow as my secondary. Â If I really want to be secure, I tie to the bow eye as well. Â I use bumpers, but there are still up and down stresses transfered to the molding.
Now when I use a slip, that's a completely different story. Â The way that I tie to the bow eye and ski tow, the boat centers in the slip and never touches the sides.
BTW, I think people sitting on the edge of the deck and sliding off into the water puts stresses on the molding rivets as well.

I hate those moldings, wish they would cap them even if it does cost more it's well worth it!..

I seen a lot of boats that come from the factory without rivet washers for backup, and they all come out real quick!.

That happens to be the most stressful part of the boat, anytime the boat comes up when it lands it's always at that point and if you notice you'll see the deck shake and there is a lot of flex in that area!..

Yeah but those moldings are not really any good for bumping unless it's rubber, all they are is to cover the gap between the deck and hull. Capping it is the way to go, but unfortunately it messes up the gel colors around the boat, unless you have a wide enough area all around the boat that's only one color!...

Yep that's typical for them to do that, can't beat the looks of of a capped deck, it is pricey to have it done right though but it is worth it!..

Quote (GlassMan @ Jan. 03 2008,10:21 am) | I like to use SS rivets. Less apt to corrode. And a dab of silicone, or better yet, 3M 5200, helps keep it water tight. Â |
Yeah stainless is the way to go, I see a lot of them with aluminum rivets and most are popped off!..

Quote (WATERDOG @ Jan. 03 2008,10:30 am) | I would love it get mine capped. How much space is needed to be done above and below. And a cost guess. |
The guys I've seen do it used about 3" or so, I've no idea what it would cost today, back in the 80's it was something like $350 for a flat???. It takes a lot of time to make it look like it's all one piece!..

3 or even 4 would work for me. Done right they really do look good. But $350 in '80's is like what, $4000 plus now? Guess I might make a phone call and see if I can get it done before the Storm. |
It would seem that way but who knows, wouldn't hurt to check, but be careful I've seen a lot of crappy cap jobs done, cheap of course!..
