It's not the best pic, but this is my hot rod. I know that it's filthy, the shot is from last summer after it had been in the shop for eight weeks!   :banghead  :angry  And then it came back with grease on the bar tape.  Anyway my deal is I'm racing in the Lake Havasu Triathlon on March 22 (or 23), which is way too soon.  I'm not doing the entire thing, just the bike.  My problem is that with my schedule I'm having a hard time getting my training in.  It's either cold or dark or both.  I've figured out that right now I can probably ride about an hour in the morning before work and an hour after work.  Which works out to just about all of my spare time(if there is such a thing).

I guess what I'm lookin for is alittle encouragment from the crew.  Thanks for takin the time to read this.

Brian

I'm not much of a bike rider, but I do run alot, never in any kind of competition though.

Thanks, I really didn't anticipate racing, either.  It's peer pressure I tell ya.

Also, I'll be at the boat show most of this week.  Staying right by the Staples Center.  Does anyone know if there if any where I could ride down there, without getting killed?

You want to ride a bike in downtown LA without getting shot. :rotflmao Good luck with that. Much safer to work the HotBoat booth. Don't even take the bike. And they use joggers for target practice, don't do that either. And if your running the cops are gonna get you. Maybe your hotel has an excercise room.

Cut me some slack I'm a country boy.  :D My next question was gonna be 'what are the odds of making it home with the bike?' Oh, and my booth got moved.  The Mrs. is sharing a booth with Hot Boat, I think.  I hope that's goin okay.

Country boy, I am cutting you some slack. The odds are not good. Why take a chance. That area is a hot spot for crime. Also wearing Red or Blue also makes you a  bigger target.

Brian, you do this!  I know it's tough finding the time, but try to figure out what you can give up for the next 6 weeks in order to get the most training time in.  And even if you don't have extra time to ride, fit something in. 10 minutes (or more) of jumping rope will give you a great workout, and help you build up your stamina.

Your goal is to finish, so find the pace that will allow you to do so, and get comfortable with it.

As for taking your bike to LA...no no no!  If your hotel has a gym, take advantage of it...or swim laps in the pool.  Taking the bike would be too much of a hassle, and chances are good you'd haul it all the way there and never use it.  Plus, it's just not safe.

Good luck...we'll be pulling for you! :)  :grouphug

Go south on Figueroa Street a few blocks...towards the USC Campus and Coliseum Complex.  Nice paths and shaded areas to cruise around in... :cool  :good

Thanks for all the input, everyone.  :good I appreaciate it.  Don't think that I'll take the bike, too many hassles.  I read that running stairs is a pretty good substitute for the bike, so I'll try that.  And Shue, the campus is a great idea.  But the more I think about it the less I want to bring my bike to LA.  If I had a beater that I could afford to lose, I would do that.  But I had my phone stolen out of a hotel room on New Years, and my other option is leave it in the back seat of my truck, both poor choices, I think.

Use the exercise room at the hotel or do a short term membership at a health club....

If your bike is worth $5 bucks to someone in LA they are going to take it from you like it or not....be careful.

Good luck in March!!!  :jumpie  :beer

My former Salesmanager was a triathlete and he'd do his bike training on a rack you mount the bike too if the weather was inclement or timing was with darkness(winter training).
Nothing beats doing the hills and putting in the miles but it was an alternative for him.
Good luck to you.... :good

Thats what I was thinking. Set it up in front of the boob tube. Turn on the speed channell or something with racing and go for it.  :good

Thanks again for all the input.  I've thought about that, but I don't have a trainer (clamps to the back axle and has ajustable tension), or rollers (the bike sits on three rollers, two in back-one front, that it spins on more like you're really riding but you can fall off, too).  I can also do spin class at the gym (which I may resort to).  I don't like indoor riding cuz even with a fan, I sweat like I sprung a leak!  :eek   It's pretty gross.   :puke

On the bright side it's getting lighter out, and I read that splitting your workouts through out the day is nearly the same as doing it all at once.  So I think I just need to just step-up and get an hour in the morning and evenings....and just deal with it.

I was able to ride for a couple of hours this morning.  I hit 47 mph on one hill and then caught a draft off of a backhoe (of all things) at 26 mph for about four miles.  So it was a great ride.   :jumpie
