Magnitude 6.0 Earthquake Strikes Northeastern Nevada (Update3)
By Chris Dolmetsch
Feb. 21 (Bloomberg) -- A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck northeastern Nevada early today, collapsing some buildings and causing gas and water leaks. No injuries were reported.
The earthquake hit at about 6:16 a.m. local time 15 miles (24 kilometers) east-southeast of Wells, a city of 1,400 people 60 miles west of the Utah state line and 149 miles west of Salt Lake City, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
``It shook the whole building,'' said Jane Kelso, a clerk at the Motel 6 in Wells. ``We have cracks in our walls.''
The temblor was felt as far north as Boise, Idaho, and as far east as Salt Lake City, according to John Bellini, a geophysicist with the survey's National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colorado.
``It felt like my whole house was coming off the foundation,'' said Sherry Justus, a utility clerk with the city of Wells who was at home getting ready for work when the quake struck.
The quake collapsed some older buildings in Wells and caused water-main breaks, said William Webb, emergency manager for Elko County. There were also reports of a propane leak at a truck stop.
``We have buildings that have been rearranged,'' Webb said in a telephone interview. ``If you were in Wells, I'm sure it livened you up. It stirred my coffee in Elko and we're 50 miles away.''
The Nevada Highway Patrol set up shelters in Wells to help local residents, and the American Red Cross dispatched aid workers to the area, patrol spokesman Jim Stewart said.
Magnitude Revised
Nevada has the third-highest number of potentially damaging earthquakes, with magnitudes of 5.0 or greater, among all U.S. states, after Alaska and California, according to the Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada-Reno.
The USGS originally reported that the quake had a magnitude of 6.3 before revising the figure. The Nevada Seismological Laboratory recorded the magnitude as 6.3, which would make it the strongest earthquake in Nevada since December 1954, said laboratory seismologist Diane Depolo.
The northeastern part of the state doesn't typically register many large earthquakes, although that may be because of a lack of monitoring instruments in the area, Depolo said.
``It's a small community so we're kind of concerned,'' Depolo said in a telephone interview. ``We have some weather coming through this weekend, so if they're turning off gas people could be cold.''
