PHOENIX - For the third time since 1996, officials plan to unleash a manmade flood in the Grand Canyon next month in an effort to restore an ecosystem that was altered by a dam constructed on the Colorado River decades ago.

The rest:

Now this could change a few things, huh? :stupid

You wanna know what's really behind the flood program??

The rafters... the beeches have erroded to the point that the rafting operators are having a hard time finding portages ( :D I think that's the term)...

An "irregular" flood schedule would most benifit the rafting operations, as it would keep the water level higher in the canyon during most of the year...

Most of the eco-crap that surrounds Glen Canyon and the Grand Canyon has much more to do with eco-tourism than the enviroment itself.  One of the reason for pushing to decommision Lake Powell is that would open up the upper Colorado for more rafting and "back country" experience.

I think its been successful in the past in regards to letting sediment pass the dam and flow through the canyon....but overall "the flood" isn't as dramatic as most would think when hearing the word FLOOD.

The BeuroRec has looked at putting slurry pipes around the dam to get more sediment down stream... that would accomplish exactly what the biologists want... but it wouldn't require any more water being released, so the greenies don't like it...

I was just reading the Operating Plan for 2008 (Final Draft released 2/25) and they mentioned that March was the targeted month for the Flood Test.   :good

If you read the Law of the River, "recreation" is way down the list of priorities for the LCR... :beat

well, sounds like they are only going to piss it a short distance! :laugh

Lake Mead / Hoover dam should catch it, I didn't read the whole thing (or the report Shue talked about) so I don't know if they plan on flooding the whole river......they'd have to open Hoover, Davis and prolly Parker to keep Havasu from getting too high.

Mead has plenty of room.  :good

There only talking 40,000 cfs for a couple of days. Mead will gain a couple of inches, which it needs, and the other dams can just go on as normal. Don't forget the 150% snowpack too.

What we term as recreation does...

but if you like spending a month on a raft and smelling like an old foot with your hairy girlfriend... pushing to drain the lakes on the Colorado River would be a good thing... all in the name of the enviroment though...  :D

Lots of one and two week trips on the Colorado, and only one, one month trip in Alaska. Always had lots of water to bath in. My favorite is the 6 day trip though the Gorge.
