I ordered plates for Jeff's truck for Christmas that read "1ST DUST", the name of his race team parent company.  About a month ago, I called them to find out where they were.  They gave me a number to call.  I've called that number 4-5 times a week for the last month.  It's busy every single time.  No hold, no message, just busy.

So I call again this morning, the main number and the guy tells me that the plate has been denied.  Then he says, "I hate to be the one to tell you this, buy they won't refund your money either." "What???" I say.  "It's there in the fine print that if they deny it, you don't get a refund."  Then he proceeds to give me a number to call.  I stop him part way through.  That's the number I already have that no one ever pics up.  He says that's the only number he can give me and suggests I call at 8:00 shart Thursday morning to get through.  I said that wasn't the only number he could give me that I wanted to talk to a supervisor.  There aren't any  :stupid Then I go ballistic.  So he says he can take my number and have someone give me a call either today or tomorrow.   :rolleyes   So I give him my number, let him know that I won't be holding my breath for a call, but I will be calling my State Senator instead.

State Senator said that was bull and the office is working on it.  They've already called me back and told me they'll be in touch again in the morning.

Can you believe that crap?!

If it's true you don't get a refund, I'm going to spend my ENTIRE week off bothering state senators, assemblymen/women, governors and all the major newspapers.

Doesn't sound right. Certainly they can apply the cost of the Plate to another choice. DMV does suk.

That does suck.  Why could no one inform you that it was denied...and tell you WHY it was denied.  There's no doubt that the inmates are running the asylum at the DMV. :rolleyes

Back in '02 I ended up applying for new personalized plates because the dealer LOST the plates on my car I had traded in.  I was a little overwhelmed from buying a new vehicle, pulling my plates was the last thing on my mind.  Shouldn't they have thought of that?  I realized it when I got home and called the dealer, he said he'd pull them.  Right.  First they couldn't find the car :eek  then they said I must have taken them, yada yada yada.  I finally gave up and just decided to reapply for them.  No can do.  The DMV won't let you get the same plates unless you have one of the original plates  in your possession.  WTF?  :angry  I swear they make up the "rules" as they go along.

I'd suggest contacting local TV stations, they all have some sort of consumer watchdog/help departments that love to tackle stories like this.

Couple years back, the wife ordered plates. She spelled name wrong. Next day DMV says we can't change to till new plates come in 8-10 weeks. After about 6 months and still no plates, DMV lets wife order new ones and was charged again. We were to get refund when the first set finally came in. Couldn't just cancell the first order. wait 12 weeks and call DMV. Said there late because of rush on plates. About 6 weeks later, both sets come on same day. Back to DMV again to ask which ones to go on car. They didn't know. Got a letter in the mail about 2 weeks later saying set two was the ones to use. Back to DMV to return set one for refund. I'm still waiting.

Jan has to deal with DMV on a weekly basis. The biggest problem is nobody really knows enough about anything. None of them know what the other is doing, each does it differently and yet they cop an attitude...Holier than Tho.
If they make a mistake(which is often) such as a typo they make it your burden to get it fixed. Once its in the system they can't just pageback on the screen and fix it :laugh  :stupid  You have to wait for the title to arrive, fill out a bunch of paperwork and resubmit it. :rolleyes
Really outdated method and system.
Never a simple process at the Ca. DMV

Lets reinstate the cartax that he got removed when he took office, that way we can fund a new system for DMV. :kiss
:rolleyes
I'll deal with the few headaches over adding 67% on the tag fees.

Shue, you gotta take care of that right away!

I'm not kidding man,,,, they effed with me big time over a freakin boat I sold 5 years ago.

The boat moved out of state and even though I filed the Release of Liability with the DMV, they didn't take my name off it 'cause the new owner didn't register it in his name in CA....well, duh - he lived in N.J.

Tax lien showed up on all my credit reports, what a pain in the butt!

I finally got the release of lien and a letter of explanation from the Controller's Office that it was their mistake so that all 3 reporting agencies would reverse the damage. :banghead

Tipical DMV crap, no different here going through BS on a trailer right now. But when you sell any vehicle you need to send in that release form right away and keep a copy of it, that clears you of any liability, learned that the hard way!.. :banghead  :banghead

Wrong for sure dude's, Why don't they call ohio DMV and ask them how they do it, Here in ohio I walk in with a list of what I want, hand the list to the lady and she run them, if the puter said one is not taken then She prints up a temp tag for your car, and in two week they come in the mail. Done.

You have to take into consideration that California has a bazillion vehicles...more than any state by a mile....

http://www.swivel.com/graphs....mit=%3E

Cars:

CA 19 million
Ohio 6 million

I'd say Alaska would be the best place to visit the DMV!  :laugh

So what?  That means they collect more DMV fees also.  They should be able to run an efficient system.  They can hire more people and have more facilities because they collect more money.  It's all relative.

A few years back we re-registered and sold a car in the same month, same car.  When we turned the plates in and ask for a refund they told us we would have to take a credit.  3 month later we needed to re-register my truck. I didn't even show up at the DMV with my check book thinking it would be covered.

Come to find out we could only use a small percentage of the credit and they took money from the credit daily.  I had to go home and get my check book.

So Cali. is not the only state with a screwed up DMV.  Nevada is pretty bad too.

That was actually in response to the comment on how easy things are in Ohio......I think it's because they are smaller...you'd think that because they are bigger the CA DMV should be better - I think it's the opposite.

Look at the LAUSD! They are huge, but they can't even cut their own paychecks!

We have soooo many cars, tooo many rules, laws, regulations and nobody uses any common sense anymore.

Just think what would happen if the CA DMV had a database breach! :break
