:D

Fuel consumption in the new jets are pretty much on par with outboards or prop inboards. It's all in how they're driven. I'll put our fuel mileage up against any "hot boater" on the boards. The port fuel injection in the 496 makes them way more efficient than the 350 carburetor engines we ran in our last set of aluminum jets.

I haven't run positive numbers yet, but I think they'll be within 1 or 2 GPH of the our outboards. The 250 Verados burn around 28 GPH at WOT, and around 8-9 GPH at cruising speed (3,800 RPM) As of today, we've put 4 hours on the boat and have burned about 25 gallons of fuel, That's just over 6 gallons per hour, running at a fairly consistent 3,100 RPMs, with minimal idling and occasional 5-10 second WOT bursts to aid in break in.

The myth of a jet boat being so much more of a gas guzzler than a prop, is just that. A myth. A jet is just an enclosed prop. Rather than pushing water against water for propulsion, as with a conventional prop, it's pushing water against air. As long as the jet/engine size is compatible with the type of hull, and the pump itself is kept within tolerances, they are very similar in fuel use to a prop. In both there will be about a 10% loss of power at the prop (or impeller) due to slippage.

The operator is the biggest fuel waster in any kind of boat. Easy/smooth on the throttle will do wonders to keep your fuel use down. Something that's really important with today's prices.

In gph they may be similar.....but the prop boat will be going twice as fast ie: double the fuel mileage.  You can't convince me otherwise.  I have heard of 21 Cougars with optimax outboard laying down close to 3 mpg at 90 mph....if you're telling me that a 21' jet that does 90 mph can match that....I gotta see it!  :say?

I've ran with a few boats with pretty similar motors and size boats as mine. Same mphs, same time cruising though channel, same run to Moabi, same time parked, ect. They're jets were using more than double the fuel as my I/O.

Now don't go bad-mouthin' the jet crowd! They're just doin' their patriotic duty to put more money into the economy in hopes of stimulatin' it. :p Engine weight to HP ratio alone puts the jets at a disadvantage. But they do make a cooler roostertail! :good

Don't get me wrong, I think that jets have their place.  Like a light weight drag boat, awesome acceleration, or for cruising the river.  But when they started putting them in 26' daycruisers with 460's, that's just redicules!  Also trying to sell them as fuel efficient is silly, too.

I'm not trying to bash anyone, but letts be realistic....jmo.

Don't get me wrong, I like jets. Especially every time I'm buying a new prop. Same motor, same weight, same HP. Their motors are just working harder at the same MPH. Those boys do love their tails though.

No kidding, I have a friend that customized his prop right under the bridge in the channel.  I think it was by the second or third arch from the island side. He wasn't really happy about it, either.  :(

You ever go to West Marine there. The biggest section in the store by far is the prop section. I think this year I'm going to carry a spare, just in case.

My buddy that just got to Havi this AM, runs a 4 blade, ladded and all, at $2,000 each. He says that's cheap. I say he getting a volume discount. He went through 6 of them last year.

Never thrown a blade, He just has a thing for rocks. I'm gonna measure the draft on his boat next time we're out. I'm guessing 4' at idle.

I hear that. I have small HP and will stay with a prop. I can run all ove Havi and still have to beg to kill fuel.  ;)

Come to think of it, I have been carring my extra prop but don't have any way to change it if out on the water if I had to.  Guess I better throw a wrench in the boat.  :beat
