California man dies in apparent drowning By Mark Hall A California man man died in an apparent drowning off the shore of Black Meadow Landing near the Parker Dam Thursday afternoon. Emergency workers pronounced Thomas Eugene Simpson III, 21, of Hesperia, Calif., dead at the scene at 1:29 p.m. after a bystander pulled him out of the water and attempted to revive him. Dep. Jimmy Trahin, of the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department, said Simpson was still alive minutes earlier and was apparently helping a family member anchor a boat 20 feet away from the shore. When the family member turned around, Simpson was gone, Trahin said. He said the family member assumed Simpson had left the boat and gone to shore. After searching for about 15 minutes, the family member and other people on the shore found Simpson submerged approximately 15 feet off the shoreline. Sheriff’s Sgt. Phil Odom said authorities are investigating the incident because there were no marks on Simpson’s body to indicate being cut by a prop or being ensnared by the anchor’s rope. Simpson’s body is being sent to the San Bernardino Coroner’s Office in San Bernardino where an autopsy will be performed. You may contact the reporter at mhall@havasunews.com.
