Do any of you use a GPS, either handheld or installed, while on the water?  At first pass, they seem like they'd be useful, but I always end up asking myself "for what?" and end up convincing myself it's one of those things I'd buy just to add to my collection of crap.  As evidence, I present my 3 car garage with no vehicles parked in it.

I guess if you do a lot of fishing it might be good for tracking hot spots, but beyond that, I'm lost (no pun intended).

Looking for some experiences and opinions.

Well Taz I have to say I'm in the same spot your in on GPS's. I have looked at them and said the same ..... Why? Where I go I know where I'm going. On the water I know whats where for the most part. There have been times I wish I could see water depth before I get there, But will they give me that info?  :stupid   Other wise I don't see a use. Just my  2 bits worth

We record a course during the daytime and when we cruise at night we follow this course cause we know it will keep us off the rocks on those dark nights.....

Its also great for mapping fishing spots that you can waypoint to get ot more quickly than just with the fish finder alone.

:good

My favorite thing with GPS. I love to listen to the true HotBoaters braging about their boats MPH numbers while setting in the channel, I just pull out the box and say prove it. You can't believe how their story changes. One excuse after another. Bench racing at it's best.

Two obvious benefits of a GPS are marking fishing spots and finding your way around a lake you don't know.

But if you always boat on the same lake or river, you can still use it if you

- If you find anything of interest that you'd like to find again on another trip. IE. a nice beach or cove you didn't know of before. Or an underwater object, like a hugh rock you don't want to hit at low tide, or a sunken boat, or a ???

- If you break down and need to call for help. Always best to know your Lat / Long to give to someone to come find 'ya

I use a hand held. Comes in handy for me as I boat on different bodies of water, including coastal boating and trips to catalina.

That's what I've used mine for......I don't usually get lost on the river, it only goes two ways - up and down. And since there's usually a current, I can figure out which way is down all by myself.  :D
