The wife and I are considering opportunities in LHC. We love to visit a few weekends every summer but are not sure if it is a place we could call home.

I was wondering what the fine folks at HDF think about Lake Havasu City as a place to live and raise a family.

Any thoughts, insights, opinions, and experiences would be greatly appreciated. :)

I moved here seven years ago and it's AWESOME!  My wife moved here five years ago and she loves it, too.  The key is to find a source of income before you move.  The imployment opportunities are alittle limited.  That's the biggest draw-back to Havasu.

I'm curious about the "raising a family" part of Jet's questions.

What do you all think about that aspect of living in LHC?

I only know 1 family in Havi with 5 kids ranging from 1 to 13 yrs old. All are very busy with all sorts of activities all the time. The Mom's job is running them around full time. Parents and kids both like the schools. All adjusted well from the move from England, by way of Tampa Florida for 3 months.

My wife was approached by her DM about a month ago regarding the possibility of her relocating to LHC to run a new store at the new mall. She told him that she was not relocatable because of my job. Well, yesterday afternoon I was recruited for a position headquartered in Boulder City with the duty station at Parker Dam (data acquisition specialist for the LCR). So, the move would be entirely job motivated as I think the opportunity for my wife is still available.

I guess I consider Havasu more of a playground than a place sink roots. I spend quite a bit of time in Havasu with my current job and have never thought of it as a place to call home. My feelings about LHC are most likely the result of just being a frequent visitor.

I get the feeling that my wife is ready to go. My boys (18 & 20) said: "HELL YEAH". My 12 year old daughter is begging us not to move (had tears in her eyes). I'm as undecided as I can possibly be.........

If the wife and I had jobs ready to go, we'd already be there.
My Mom and wife went to the mall last Tues afternoon. Both liked it. Both enjoyed Dillard's way to much. Wish that store didn't take credit cards.

I hear ya, brother. I try not to say much since the wife works hard for her money...... I just don't like surprises when the statements come in the mail.

I think that people have the wrong impression of Havasu, just from visiting.  When you visit, you seek out all the crazy lake/party stuff.  But it really is centered on the weekends and the lake/channel.  If you're here all the time you don't really spend as much time down there as you do on a visit.  I love boating and I moved here for the lake, but I really never hang out in the channel.  I like to cruise thru and check it out, but I don't park there all day.  And as far as the kids go it really comes back to parenting, kids will find as much trouble as you let them.  So you really control your exposure to all the crazy stuff, here.  If you want to party with the 20 year olds, :drink  :ass  go do it.  But if you don't, just go a couple of blocks from the water and you'll never know that it's spring break, or whatever the excuse is this week.

Yeah, what he said. Except for the boys, substitute parenting with duct tape, handcuffs, leg irons, and maybe throw in a ball and chain.

I was thinking of moving there myself in a few years. I was thinking of making it the place to retire.

Spent my formative years in the desert (Eagle Mountain, CA), frequented Havasu during that time, and even lived in Havasu for a short while, and while LHC has grown and changed since then, I'd still have to say that LHC is a helluva lot better place to live and raise a family than 95% of the rest of the country! The schools are excellent (on average, probably a year or two ahead of Cali), the crime rate has increased over the decades but is still lower than the national average for a city of that size(and most crimes are of an "opportunistic" nature, aka: stolen items from boats, stereos,CDs, etc.), and while it's been awhile since we stayed there for any length of time, the LHC CC was always sponsorin' events, mostly throughout the week, for the community. Mind you that much of my input is "dated", but if I could, I'd move back there in a heartbeat! But whoever told you to have a job waitin' for you before you move there is right on! Good payin' jobs are at a premium out there and difficult to attain due to the fact that most employers in the area are extremely loyal to the "long term" residents. ie: if you're up for a job alongside an applicant with a few more years of residency.....I think you get the picture. Still a great place to raise a family, IMO!  :good

A while back we were thinking about moving the factory to Nevada...but I was pushing hard for AZ.....someplace by the river would have been perfect.  ;)

Only problemo was that L.A. came up with all kinds of incentives for us to stay put.  :(
