THIS WEEK'S HOT MICROSOFT STORY:

Windows PC users are reacting to the news that beginning in June...

...Microsoft is going come over to your house and beat you with a stick if you don't start using their new (but horribly slow and flawed) operating system called Windows Vista.

And this is no joke:

Because after Microsoft REFUSES TO ALLOW COMPANIES TO SELL COMPUTERS WITH WINDOWS XP INSTALLED in June...

...they're going to stop SUPPORTING the copy of Windows XP you have on your EXISTING computer on April 14, 2009, just a year from now.

This is standard SOP with Microsoft and operating systems... about 18 months after the roll out of the new one, they stop supporting the old ones.

You can still get some service packs, but no more updates or fixes... unless they are doing something different this time...

After PeckerSoft did this with Win2k, we ran another 2+ years at GenMills before upgrading... :beat  :good   The change was driven by SAP, not the Windows end user needs.

Hey, 98 still works nicely with older, low ram, desktops.  Win2k is on several machines around here (server based) with no complaints from the users.

We are considering using something of this nature to expand our user base, as the majority of the DT's just sit all day anyway... :beat

Heck, I'm still using a few '98 machines.....all my electronic orders come in over one.

I'd go crazy if I had to upgrade 50 users to Vista - it took 5 years just to get them to move up to Windows 3.1 from MS DOS. Switching to XP was traumatic for some.... :cry

I'd switch to Linux, but my manufacturing software won't run on it.  :break

This post is on my office Win98 software. All my other biz computers are on XP.
I've not heard much positive about Vista for the most part. And living here one town away from Vista, known for it being the old farts town, doesn't make me want to jump and down to much. Driving through Vista is like Havasu in the winter. :rotflmao

My Tosh laptop is Vista.  It's been rock-solid, no problems yet, but I'm not running any legacy stuff or peripheals.

Most everything I plug into it configs automatically.... :cool  I know of others that have struggled a bit...it certainly needs LOTS of ram and process POWER to run effectively.

Here at the office thay were running test systems with Vista. The goal was to roll Vista out to everyone. It only took 2 days with the test systems to shut the program down due to incompatability to several software packs that we are using.  :break

Mac's would be everywhere if you could buy one for 500.00 .... but ya can't... until Apple releases the strangle hold on Macintosh hardware, it'll always be a niche machine.

We bought a HP laptop and were not to happy with it.  After uninstalling a bunch of crap off of it and disabling just about everything in the start up menu we got it to run OK.  Now 2 months later we had to turn it in for warranty work because the damn think wouldn't power on.  And all of my wifes work files are on it.  It's a good thing we didn't $hit can our old computer with windows XP on it or she wouldn't be working right now.

Next time MAC.  I know a few peolpe with Macs and they say they are worth the extra money.

I have vista...no major probs (knock on wood) but can't say I'm totally thrilled with it, other than it automatically installing drivers.

Oh computer gurus, I have a question for you.  Is Firefox compatible with Vista?  Another board I post at has become very IE incompatible since the board owner tweaked it and the general message to the thousands of members is "use a different browser or deal with it". :rolleyes   I glanced over the Firefox site and didn't see much info right off the bat.

Apple keeps trying to get me to download Safari with my iTunes updates...and again, I have no idea if that is compatible so I keep saying no.

Any info would be greatly appreciated. :good

I use Firefox with the Tor network and it works fine for me.

I had Safari on one machine for a time, and while it worked fine on XP, it conflicted with some other stuff I use, so I deleted it.  :break

Firefox is "tolerable", especially if you don't have I.E.  :break   I don't like the way it handles downloads, fonts, frames, style pages, etc ... :confused

We've got Safari on our MAC's ... seems to be fine, the little I've worked with it (like now)... :good   I may just download it on my Vista to see what's what... :stupid

IE7 is just too comfortable right now to "change"...

I'll let you d/l Safari and try it out...since you will know how to fix your puter if it breaks it. :eek  :laugh  ;)

I had firefox on another computer and never got comfortable with it either.  Supposedly it doesn't have the issues IE has...but I never liked it.

One would think the owner of a site with more than 20,000 members *might* want to work on the incompatibility issues..but he's an asshat.  Right Kelly? :rolleyes  :laugh

AssHat?  And here I thougt he was a F&%ktard......

Wait, did he copyright those terms already???

:rotflmao  :rotflmao

I was trying to be charitable. :D

He'd better not copyright my term...f*&kwit.  :angry  :finger
