Quote (Wifey @ July 24 2008,8:12 am) | Gig ~ what's happening...where are you going??? |
That's right! You've been away; haven't ya? Had my left hip replaced due to osteoarthritis back in Feb. and have been off work since then. Was off work under the FMLA act and that ran out in May (12 week coverage). My doctor released me to go back to work w/restrictions on July 14th. Been advised by my doctor not to squat, no heavy lifting or pulling, no kneeling, no crawling, no work in confined areas, and recommended I stay off of ladders. Well, my job pretty much requires I do these things from time to time and my employer is saying that they can't accommodate these restrictions; so they have notified me that if the restrictions aren't lifted, they'd have to find a replacement. They also stated that if this were a workers' comp claim that they could accommodate the restrictions, but since it isn't, they require me to come back @ 100%, no restrictions. I understand their position; but I've had many of these restrictions "self-imposed" for @ least 30 years due to my "football knees" and they never had a problem w/my work. Have even gone as far as to volunteer for a less demanding position w/ pay a rate reduction. Has a real feel that they've seen an opportunity to get rid of da gig. Really haven't liked me being around for a couple of years now! Voluntarily stepped down to make room for someone w/more seniority as Ranch Manager in 2001 so that I could stay w/the company (they were closing "his" ranch down and he had his nose stuck up theis a$$es just a bit higher than I did and I figured stepping down was the only avenue they had given me to stay). Funny thing is that this guy and I were "friendly" and I've been doing about 70% of his job for him since he became my supervisor and now the ~insert the "Viagra" assisted part of the male anatomy~ has taken to cutting my throat every chance he gets. Seems to not like having my "recommendations" working and his not! Have ran my department (packer/conveyor maintenace) entirely on my own w/ zero input from any of my "supervisors" for the last 15 years. ("Funny" sidenote: My bosses are so out of touch w/ the requirements of my position that, when my doctor asked for a job description from my company, I had to write up another one as they didn't have one on file, which I had written up in '96 and my replacement had so "efficiently" lost out of the manger's file cabinet. I have always worked with it being the other way around; supervisors telling me my job description, not vice-versa.) Anyways, to make a long story short (too late), part of my salary included a house on the ranch rent free and all utilities payed due to being on-call 24/7 three weeks a month, which BTW my "replacement" rarely does. They've even been knocking on my door and/or calling while I've been off to figure their crap out for them since nobody else seems to know what's going on. The "clinker" is that everybody @ work wants me back in charge instead of the current guy because he doesn't know his a$$ from his elbow but won't say anything about him and his crews' ineptitude in fear of falling in disfavor with the company. The man that originally hired me has moved up the ladder and has gone "lazy". We used to have a good repoire but now he just sits on his a$$ in his office/ truck and takes his lead from the current supervisors while knowing that the people in place don't have a clue. He wanted to fire the guy that took my place as manager on numerous occasions due to his ineffectiveness but the guy was "close" to the founder's grandson (who was his supervisor until 2001), therefore was pretty much untouchable. (Funny thing. Even his ex-supervisor/"freind" has questioned his "move up the ladder". He too "secretly", but confessed to a few of us, thinks that he's incapable of handling the position he's currently in.) So, when I officially lose my job, which I am reluctantly fighting for due to my not wanting to move, I have to move off the property and with rents running anywhere from $1400 to $2000 a month and utilities being what they are in the area, I foresee some very tough times ahead. Need to stay in the area due to the wife's job, which is the source of our health insurance. I'm 54 years old with bad knees, a repaired hip, and well, lets just say that I could be in better health. Basically, IMO, I'm pretty much screwed as life goes! Will most likely have to take on two jobs to make ends meet and don't see too much free time or "expendable" income in my immediate future. With the last few years of bad luck and helping the Family out and no raises from '00 to '06, have incurred debts of nearing $85,000 and having skills that are "outdated" (all self-taught, no formal education in my field) and with unemployment rising, I think I'm gonna have a tough time selling myself to prospective employers. Sorry about the long post(failed miserably @ making the long story short; didn't I?) , but its a rather convoluted story and that's just a synopsis of what's going on. Thanx to y'all for listening to my whining; and for those that didn't read through the whole thing; good for you! Because all-in-all, it was pretty boring. Gotta go practice on my job skills, so I'll sign off for now!
