Seemed to be no rhime or reason for it either ....the bendix gear would just get eaten up...flywheel perfect. Wouldn't matter if the starter was new or rebuilt and I kept it well lubed. |

No that's common with Chevys, starter is too tight. I kinda figured that was the problem, that's why they give you shims when you buy a starter, I've never had one yet that didn't need at least one or two shims!..

Not really, brand new ones from the factory are pretty well right on, it's the rebuilt ones that have that problem, if the mounting surface is crappy they machine the nose(instead of replacing) a tad and that brings it closer so they give you shims, anytime you put a re built on you have to check the clearance!.. Actually it should be checked regardless!...
