I finally found my extra Marine starter I've had for 4 years for the Canoe. Been looking for a week. :banghead  And of course it was right where I knew it wouldn't be. Things brand new, I'm glad I found it :)

Tested it out works great :jumpie  Now who wants to go up to Apache and put it in for me. I'll buy the beer :D  :beer I need to figure how to get my air tools up there :stupid That makes it much less painful :break

Chevy or Ford power in the canoe?
Location of the starter was one big reason I chose a Chevy in my old jetboat......of which I always had a spare with me, that was the one thing that always went out on it....two seasons or perhaps three.

Seemed to be no rhime or reason for it either :stupid ....the bendix gear would just get eaten up...flywheel perfect. Wouldn't matter if the starter was new or rebuilt and I kept it well lubed.

No that's common with Chevys, starter is too tight. I kinda figured that was the problem, that's why they give you shims when you buy a starter, I've never had one yet that didn't need at least one or two shims!.. :D

Not really, brand new ones from the factory are pretty well right on, it's the rebuilt ones that have that problem, if the mounting surface is crappy they machine the nose(instead of replacing) a tad and that brings it closer so they give you shims, anytime you put a re built on you have to check the clearance!.. Actually it should be checked regardless!... :)
