Ummmm, lack of....wind??
|
Well... in a way... yes...
As people demand more alternatives forms of energy generation, a larger and larger chunk of the electricy is generated in those ways. OK...
The problem becomes that FERC and NERC require utilities to have back up generation to feed the loads. So for every kW generated by wind, there has to be a more conventional form of generation to back it up...

That's to say that for every renewable generator installed, there's a coal plant somewhere that will pick up the generation.
Green is all about marketing.
I won't live to see the day that another nuke plant is built in this country, even though they'd solve a good chunk of the energy question.

Personaly I'm all for solar. If we can generate power via wind that would help if we can find a safe and efisiont(sp) way to stor extra power

Super conductors...
There are a few transmission lines in Europe that are using "warm" superconductors... warm being a relative term of course, but I don't think they require a cryogenic plant...
Once that technology get's proven, then you'll start seeing ways to "store" generated electricity. Â Not to mention the increases in efficiancy of electric motors.
One problem with solar is that the panels start loosing generating capacity when the temps get warm. Of course, the places that the sun shines all the time... are hot when you need the generation. There is a solar conentrator planned here in Tucson... a bunch of parabolic mirrors that have a tubes of water running down the center. The focused energy turns the water to steam, which is directed to a steam turbine, generating electricity. It'll be a good "peaking" plant, since it'll generate the most heat right in the middle of the day.

I can't find anything on the DOE's site about a new reactor comming on line in California...
Here's the statement I found...
Quote | No early site permits (ESPs) for California locations have been filed with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and no company has announced any intention to build a nuclear plant in the State. |
Do you know the name of the project?
