Blast Sends Water Heater Airborne

POSTED: 7:33 am MST August 14, 2008
UPDATED: 5:26 pm MST August 14, 2008

PHOENIX -- An explosion launched a water heater into the air, rocking a northeast Phoenix neighborhood early Thursday morning.

The water heater landed almost three blocks away in someone's front yard.

After the explosion, fire crews evacuated the neighborhood but later allowed people back into their homes.

Neighbors said the explosion woke them up.

"It was a really loud bang and everything shook," David Farmer, who lives next door, told KTAR-FM. "It felt like a semi-trailer truck hit my house."

Patricia Barclay, who lives about two blocks from the explosion, said the blast knocked all the pictures off her walls.

"It sounded just like a bomb," she said to KTAR-FM. "I came straight out of the house in my pajamas running down the street. I came straight down toward Thunderbird. I thought maybe it was a car accident or something. I looked over by Indian Bend School, and there's a water heater setting on the ground. The next thing I know, I look over and there's a house completely gone."

SRP said there were no signs of a gas leak, and firefighters said that the explosion could have been caused by any number of things.

The homeowner, who was in the house at the time of the explosion, was not injured

I seen Myth Busters do that same thing and the water heater landed something like 10 to 15 seconds later and the blast distoryed the shed they built.

That is scary! :eek
