Hurricane Gustav has now reached Category 5 status. :eek   A friend from another board who is one of the Hurricane Hunters flying into Gustav just posted this pic from Google Earth:

Here's the latest projected path:

I have several friends in that projected path, so any good thoughts you can send their way will be appreciated. :(

It's not looking good.  Gas stations in LA and AL are already out of gas, interstates are jammed and the contraflow doesn't even start until tomorrow morning.  Offshore rigs were evac'd today but that only gets the workers to the mainland...they still have to get to safety.

Well this is not going to be good for folks down south, BUT we do need some rain up here, have not not any in a while and this will bring lots of rain to us by weeks end. If it turn north. Funny thing is that we will get Lots of wind and rain from the left over storm. Only 1051 miles away.

It looks like they've done a good job getting people and pets out of NOLA and other areas.  Contraflow was supposed to last 20 hours, they stopped it after 12 because most folks had left already. :good

Still it isn't going to be pretty.  My friends from Key West up to the Panhandle are just getting slammed with rain and wind.

Oh yeah, and gas prices are already going up.  I filled up when I got home from Davis, by the time I left the station there were lines. :eek

Down to a Cat 2, about to make landfall.  Looks like NOLA won't get a direct hit, but bad enough.  Unbelievable amounts of rain are predicted, but so far the main problem has been wind.

And good Lord, Mayor Nagin was just on TV.  In the Industrial Canal, where the first levee breaches happened in Katrina, 2 small ships and a barge have broken loose and are just crashing around into everything.  The Coast Guard is trying to see if they can get people in there to get the vessels tied up and prevent a breach....God help those guys. :(

Seems like 20+ inches of rain could do a lot of damage just about anywhere.

Yeah, and add in the storm surge...and all that rebuilding in the lower ninth ward and other places may have been for naught. :(

I think everyone is just holding their breath now.  Remember that when Katrina came ashore NOLA breathed a sigh of relief since it seemed to be less than expected...it was later that all hell broke loose.

Gulfport sure was getting hammered, those outer bands are just plain wicked.

I swear we were getting sympathy winds last night...kept me awake.

Our oldest Son is in the Coast Guard. He was sent there following Katrina. Doesn't look as though he'll go this time.  :good

And now it's Ike... :angry

This thing is massive.  I *think* all my friends in the low lying areas of coastal Texas have headed for higher ground but I worry about the ones that didn't.  Reports are saying it could still be a Cat 2 when it hits Houston. :eek   I'm waiting to hear a report from our Hurricane Hunter, she said it was doing funky things when they flew into it yesterday but hasn't been able to give us much more detail than that.

Gas prices in the gulf and south have SKYROCKETED...up 50 cents in a matter of hours last night and expected to go over $5/gal by tomorrow.  I expect our prices will rise as well, simply because they can. :finger

Go away Ike! :pissed
